the $500 car is now gone
At work today I recived an "E.T. Blast" on the smog machine I went on line tohttp://www.smogcheck.ca.gov/pubwebqu...aspx?year=2010 and could not find it, mabe it will show up in the next few days. But Here it is:
Vehicle Retirement Expansion
August 12, 2010
"Effective immediately the Bureau of Automotive Repair,
Consumer Assistance program is expanding the vehicle retirement option to
include off-cycle vehicles. Eligible consumers may retire their vehicle for $1,00 at any time for any reason.
A supply of new applications will be
sent to you for distribution to consumers. Applications can be obtained online at www.smogcheck.ca.gov. If you have any questions regarding the change please contact our office at
(916) 255-0719 or toll free at (866) 272-9642"
So now no used car in California is worth less than $1000

Re: the $500 car is now gone
no..NEVER!!! but if this program were in effect six months ago I would not have been able to buy my car for $400.
I am however getting rid or my dodge caravan, we bought it about three years ago, for $650, have spent minimal money on maintenance, the thing has almost a quarter of a million miles on it, severe pealing paint, dents, worn out tires, a nasty vibration, and the state is going to give me a grand for the P.O.S. ya I am going to retire the sucker.
I just wanted people to know what is available to them, people can form their on oppions about the possable backlash of this program:
1: no more cheep running cars for sale
2: fewer cars at the junk yards (I believe that retired cars MUST be crushed complete)
3: no more cars donated to ligimate charities, if this was in effect a year ogo I would not have donated my jetta, it would have been scraped.
I am not preaching for or against this new program, I have retired in the past, and am already in process of retiring the van due to smog failure before the change. just wanted people to be informed about options, and let them know why the cheep cars might no longer be available soon.

Ya, I know that is part of the reason I posted the info here, it is amazing how many people don't know about it.
