I made my first 1/4 mile run, now I have some questions...
A few days ago, I went up to the local dragstrip (Keystone Raceway) for the first time to test out my car. My best time was a 14.6 at 92mph. At the time, I had the following modifications done to my car:
Hypertech coil, cap, and rotor
MSD 8.5mm plug wires
Regular ACDelco spark plugs gapped at 0.045
Catco hi-flow catalytic converter
Hooker Aerochamber cat-back system
Partially-gutted air box
B&M Megashifter
Custom fan setup (stayed around 195°)
Mobil-1 synthetic oil
Stock 3.23 gears with limited-slip diff
Regular air filters (no K&N yet)
Some generic airfoil
Other than that, it's a stock '86 IROC with a 305 TPI engine and 700R4 trans. Does a 14.6 for that configuration sound decent, considering it was my first time dragging?
I just built a custom ram-air setup for my car. Along with a Transgo shift kit (from Pro-Built Automatics), subframe connectors, and a custom chip (a tuned '89 MAF bin), could I be in the upper 13s? I think the shift kit will really help because when I go to shift, I literally have to let my foot halfway off the gas for nearly a second before the tranny "catches" and moves to the next gear... that's definitely costing me time. What do you think?

I can believe that u ran a 14.6@92 with a 1985 LB9 auto. For the mods that u have I think that is an impressive time with that engine and peanut cam.
I dont know if u will be able to get into the 13 range with that cam. If u got a new cam u would be in the high 13s with those mods I think.

I agree , even a mild cam with say 206/210 .050 and 450 lift w 112 would make that thing cook.I have an 86 T/A and stock it ran a 15.3 @ 89.2 mph , so youre beating me by basicly 7 tenths with a cat-back. I know what you mean about the shift from first to second, it stinks, the trans-go will cure that , as will a custom chip that maked lock-up occur after 40mph instead of the stock rediculous setting. I would try the free mods listed elsewhere (open up plenum etc) and you may squeese a few tenths out of it more. But cam and head work will make you fly fast!

I was equally surprised with my time... Whenever I got my time slip, I thought to myself, "Geez, I thought these things were supposed to run about a full second slower!"
I've definitely got to do some of the free mods like plenum porting. I'm saving that for winter (when I take my intake off I'm going to polish it at the same time). I'm not sure if anyone saw my other post about my custom ram-air, but I'll be testing that out on Tuesday when I go back to the track... that might be good for another tenth or two.
One of these days I'm gonna check the casting numbers on the heads, too. It's a little interesting that my 1986 V8 has center-bolt valve covers, when those premiered in 1987

. U should also add some headers with a hi flow Y pipe. That would really open things up for u to. I would say that u would lose about .3 to .4 of ur time. I would do headers before anything else. Then get a new cam and some heads.
what was ur 60ft time and how did u launch ur car.

Yeah, I was looking at SLP headers (I hear those are the best for third-gen F-bodies) but it's hard to justify the $600 price (coated).
My 60ft time was 2.049 seconds. I launched by holding the brake and revving the car to about 1200rpm in first gear. My stall converter is still stock so I can't make the engine go much higher without moving.

I managed to check the numbers on my block and it turns out that I DO have a 350... one of the previous owners must have swapped it in several years ago. That explains my 14-second times, too. Here's a link to the other post I made if anyone is interested:

There's nothing wrong with the Hedman shorties and Y pipe. About $250 for the whole thing. I think they even sell some with air tubes if you want to keep that. No reason for it unless they do visual inspection.
14.6 @ 92mph is about right. It's a replica G92 350. My buddy has a 89 Formula w/new stock heads and I pull about 1-2 on him after traction. Now that I got my DRs tho I'll wave goodbye to him the entire time.

There are a ton of different kinds of hedders there. Find the ones that suit you best. Full lengths are a pain to fit so I don't recomend them. Painted shorties are $105 w/o air tube and O2 sensor bung. That's the absolute cheapest way to go. Some people have had real good luck with high temp paint if you bake it properly.
