gear ratio

My car is still equipped with the stock 2.73 gear ratio. Is that a horrible ratio? It's probably not good for racing, huh?

It's a highway gear to keep the engine rpms low at highway speeds. A performance street/strip gear would be 3.42 or 3.73. 4.10 gears and deeper are usually a bit too much unless you use 28"+ tall tires.

Yep. Ideally you want to be at the top of your 1:1 gear (3rd in most automatic cars) through the traps, 2.73's wont even put you at the top of second in most cars. A friend of mine with a stock 350 in a 73 Nova went from 15.5's to 14.2's from swapping from 3.08 gears to 3.73 gears, posi and msd .
