New Best

Trying out a new chip and it worked! It finally got me back into the 1.6x launches. Haven't been there since I was still on the stock stuff. It doesn't pull near as hard in 3rd gear as the Thrasher chip I had before. Best MPH before was 121, best with this chip was 117.7. Either way, I'm happy Just need to combine the good of both chips to make a really nice run.

Here's the run:

60'.........1.623
330'.......4.755
660'.......7.420
MPH.......90.69
1000'.....9.706
1/4.......11.618
MPH......115.77

What rear end, gear ratio and converter are you running?

Thanks

Lots of nice cars, that's for sure. How about that 3rd gen Formula running 9.4's. Impressive. And the other TTA running 10.4 but blew a head gasket about 100' from the traps.

Great time as usual. I got bumped in the 2nd round, spun too much coming out. Its ashame because I was all over that tree yesterday. That doesn't happen very often

Maybe we can hook up sometime.

Nice times!! I have a few more questions on the rear though as I've been running a 9 bolt behind my big block for 5 years now.

How many passes on it?

Ever though of going to a 3.73, 3.91 or 4.10 gear?

I'm curious how that would affect your 60ft. I went from a 3.27 to a 3.73 and my 60 ft was the same at 1.72-1.75, but I'm only running a 2400 converter and I definately need more. I'm thinking about going to the 3.91, but without an overdrive (ie T400) and 26in tires, that's a lot of rpm on the highway

Do you like the 3200 vigilante on the street? With that much stall and only a 3.27 gear, don't you get a lot of slippage on the highway (especially in OD)?

Thanks
Miles

Have probably close to 200 passes on it.

With the 245/50/16 Nitto Drag Radials, 3.27 is all the gear I need. I'm going through the traps at 5100 or so. Any higher and I would have to go into OD. That's with it locked up also.

As for the short times, it might help but the turbo Buicks really don't need gearing to launch. Just stall and boost.

I love the Vig on the street, at the track, anywhere. Once it locks up in 4th, its just like stock. Still get over 25mpg, 20-22mpg combined. I think its a great converter, pricey but you get what you pay for.

The Nittos I have are drag radials. I use them as every day tires. They are getting a little thin for street driving. They have about 13K miles on them right now.

But I did do a comparison of BFGDR vs Nittos on my 96 WS6. I ran 315/40/17 BFGDRs vs. 275/40/17 Nittos. Best 60' on the BFGs was 1.80. Best on the Nittos was 1.75. Mileage for the BFGs was 6K. Mileage for the Nittos was 15K.

Car was a 6spd with 4.10 gears. Best run was 12.4@111.

My opinion is the Nittos are better. They last longer and are more consistent. The BFGs are terrible in the rain. The Nittos are fine for everything but snow That's why I bought them for the TTA.

Hope that helps

I have 275 Nittos DRs on my car with a 5-speed TKO manual...any tips on getting the launch right? Might doesn't hook too well yet.

What tire pressure do you use, and what is your burnout technique and how long do you hold it for? Thanks for answer my qeustions a head of time.

16" I run 20-22psi. 17" I ran 17psi.

With the WS6, I never could dump the clutch. Even with ET Streets and a 5500 dump was still the same 60' as the Nittos.

What I did was a 2nd gear burnout for about 4-5 seconds until you could see smoke in the mirrors. I used to bring it up to about 4-4500 and dump the clutch. Just modulate the gas/brake to not over rev or stall the engine. Take foot off the brake and let the tires bring the engine down. Roll up to the line and get ready. I brought the rpm up to about 15-1800 depending on how the pad was. I would launch with rolling on the throttle as fast as I could at the same time letting the clutch out. Not really riding it but coming off fast. Think of it as fast feet I never just mashed the pedal.

What really helped me was practicing launching on the street. Its really a finese kind of thing. Once you can get it on the street, do the same thing at the track and modify the rpm to where you don't bog or spin. Just takes practice.

And if you want to make up some time during the run, never lift. That's worth .3-.5 sec. by itself.

Thanks for the tips!

I have to try this never lift thing, I'm a little scared tho I will have to get a rev. Limiter first! I can see how it wouldn't be that hard for the 1-2 or 3-4 shift but how do you not lift for the 2-3 shift that is pretty damn long.

Try it at lower rpm so you don't over rev if you miss. 3rd isn't too bad once you get the hang of it. I used the palm of my hand and pushed diagonally. The shifter is 3rd gear biased and should go right in. If you actually try and shift it, you'll miss it.

Its also easier with an aftermarket shifter.

Rob, when u had the WS6, what were your 60' times? I also have a 6 speed with 4.10 gears and was curious what i will be able to pull once I get some traction.

With the stock GSC's, the best was a 1.87 with most in the low 1.9 range. With the Nittos, 1.75 was the best. Many 1.7 short times the last year I had it.
