I bought a third gen last night. Everything rebuilt in the car or replaced within the last 15k miles EXCEPT the differential. That just died this morning. Should have seen it coming. Anyway to the point

Assuming the Differential was good, the car has edelbrok intake manifolds and headers, flowmaster catback, no cat, bored out to 310 (from a 305) Centerforce clutch and 3.73s. How fast (or slow) are we talking. Hp or 1/4 time guesstimates?

Is it a stock rebuild on the motor, or a performance rebuild? What cam is in it and has any head work been done?

I have to agree wtih kfoley
If it has good headwork, and milling for more comp you could have a high 13's low 14's car there. The cam is also a big question too.
Friend of mine has similar mods, a great cam(too big if you ask me), and did alot of head work, and he runs 13.9

heh.....
Hey Chris....

Hey guys, I just sold my white car to this guy over the weekend!!!

NICE TO SEE YOU ALREADY KILLED THE DIFF.

When I left I told you to learn how to drive it before you try to get all crazy....there you go. Look in my signature, that's how fast it WAS when all the smogger stuff was off. Now it probably runs a high 14.

Good luck getting the car back into shape.

Edit: I read what you wrote about what happened when the car crapped out on you, and I know for a fact that you were not just trying to put the car in gear and the diff. exploded.

What were you doing??? I don't get it. Sounds to me like you were revving up the motor, put it in 1 st and launched while simultaneously hearing the diff. break apart.

I really do not see how it would have broke any other way, they don't just fall apart. The seals and everything except the pinion bearing were still in tip-top shape, so I was in no hurry to swap the gears and such.

Let me know if you need some advice on what to do.

the diff guy told me the diff was ready to go, but anyway im over the fact that its getting replaced. what im concerned about is the smog, i checked on the dmv site, and the seller is responsible for smog. i dont mind smogging it as long as i dont have to go out and buy a new cat. Will my forth gen cat work?

nope....
No, your 4th gen cat will not work. Apparently that whole dmv concept you mentioned is new to me cause when I bought the car I had to smog it before I had to register it, that was about 1 1/2 yrears ago. My girlfriend bought a car over THIS summer and it was the same, she smogged it after she bought it. Anyway, the car may even pass without the cat. I know you noticed that it's running really smooth, and pretty lean cause the motor is beefed up, the plugs are new, and the ignition is in top shape.

I had a 84 trans am with NO smog equipment on it and a holley carb, met a guy that would pass the visual check ( which your car will pass) and I pulled the car up on the rollers and it passed quite easily.

Cats are not that expensive, and you could buy one from Napa or something, take the other cat off ( keep it) , have the muffler shop weld that piping back in ( the one I gave you) , smog it, and your done. Through the old hollow cat on and run it for 2 years, until smog time.

If you want to make the car faster, I can tell you what I was planning to do to it to get it in the mid-low 13's so you can take on pretty much anything on the street.

From a roll the car acts like a 13 second car. It needs lower control arms and relocation brackets. BAD. Wheelspin is definately the problem.

The cam is a minor smog legal cam .420/.442 lift.

Consistency of the driver it difficult with this car cause the launch has to be a work of art. You can either run a high 15 or a mid 14 with it depending on the launch.

thanks alot matt, sorry about the mess and ill keep in contact with you about the car, im probably getting it painted next week, and putting my entire fourth gen interior in it. any help/suggestiosn are welcome, specially those mid 13 suggestions. im gonna be coming up on 5 grand in a few months (from the lawsuit over my last 4th gen) so i should be set money wise. I could probably get some LCAs for free from a friend who autocross's camaros. i dunno, we'll see. If you'd like, id trayed you that strut tower brace for a cat and some money to get it installed.

Just ordered a brace yesterday, along with subframe connectors and control arm relocation brackets.
