Is this an NHRA Pro ET type class?
Bandimere modifies the rules a little and requires a 13.80 or faster dial for the Pro class here. They allow a tranny brake but no launch/throttle stop electronic boxes.
I can't pull a 13.8 yet at altitude, and no tranny brake, so I run in Sportsman or Street classes. This year, the Friday night Street class has attracted a lot of competition, around 90 cars a race night. I went out in the 2nd round in the 1st race, so was tied for 20th with about 20 others (you have to be "registered" to accumulate season points - about 3/4ths of the people who race are). 2nd race I went 4 rounds and moved up to 6th. 3rd race I made it to the quarterfinals and moved up to 3rd (went out to the guy who is now 2nd). The guy in 1st made it to the finals the first 2 races, so he's way out in front right now. The top 3 out of this class qualify for the Summit ET Div. V finals (in Topeka this year).
For the Saturday series, I run in another Sportsman-like class called "Run Tuff", similar to Street except slicks allowed (no boxes), and for some reason they put a 18.00 or quicker dial restriction on the class - 60-some cars typically show up for a race. I started out better in that class, have been at least in the top 10, and I'm sitting 3rd right now, just behind the pair tied for 1st and barely ahead of 4th place. Last weekend I was paired with one of the guys tied for 1st (the other guy ran ahead of us in the class and got beat), I managed a win against him but after the 1st round the rains started, so I didn't have a chance to improve on them. If we had continued racing and I won 2 more rounds, I would have moved into 1st place. The top 6 out of this class qualify for the Div. V finals.
My goal this year is to finish high enough in one of these classes to make it to Topeka.

Being in the top half of the points standings is good but that just means there are drivers who go more rounds than you or make it to the track more. Being in the top 1/4 is even better.
I'm only racing in one points series this year. I'm currently in 7th place with 4 other drivers who have the same amount of points. So far there have been only 20 cars in my class. All I have to go is go a couple of rounds and I could be near the top.

Not bad at all for first year.
I believe I've heard the elevation in IL is less that 1000'.
