Made it to the 11's

The car finally made it to the 11's with an 11.863 @ 113.281 with a 1.67 60ft.

Then 2 runs later the engine went South. So far I know the lifters on 7 and 8 are smashed badly and the back of the cam is broken and loose. I would suspect a rod let loose.

Been there. Done that. Engines always run the best just before something lets go.

From what a few people said, it sounded like the car looked like the one in your avatar.

Number 8 rod broke about 1 to 1.5 inches above the throw. Smashed the cam up and broke out the back of the block around the cam bearing. Found a valve head, oil ring, and other smaller bits in the pan. Looks like not much to salvage.

Posted what I thought happened before we tore it down. Rod didn't break the number 8 piston disintegrated. That caused all the carnage.

Never had the motor or car on a dyno so don't know what hp it had.

90/10 drag struts on the front and a stock rear suspension with air bags.

That sounds exactly what happened to my old 383 back in 1999. Cast pistons and rod bolts spinning up to 7000 rpm. Hard to say exactly what the original cause was but it looked like one rod was thrown and one piston disintegrated.

Look anything like this?

Those pictures look eerily familiar Stephen. I will try to post a couple of mine. But it definately looks similar.

At least my heads were salvagable. I know they have at least 5 visibly bent valves but no damage to the heads. Some day I'll get them all set up again for a SBC I may build just to sell.

6200rpm and hard to say for sure but the machine shop thinks the piston broke first.
