ehh 882's are alright but not anything special, they can be cleaned up a bit with porting though,if u know u are doing.i built a motor with them for my friends el camino, ported 882's with a .060 over 350.with .250 speedpro hyperectic domed pistions 10.2-1 cr ,rpm performer airgap,i forget the specs on the cam but i know it was like .510/.525 lift, holley 670 street avenger carb, hooker long tubes, true dual 3 inch, turbo 350 trans with 2,800 stall and 3:73 gears, and he was going like 12.5-12.8's

i was thinking of geting some better heads i just threw those on to get it running really and to save enough for some new ones. i really want to get into the mid 12s to low 13 range. i was thinking about geting some sportsman 2 heads would this get me there im trying to spend no more than 1000 on heads. and what other things could i do to get me there. thanks

with those junk heads and peanut cam and the rest of the mismatched parts your looking at a solid 14/15 second ride...

the sportsman II heads are not really anything special either. they need alot of port work outta the box to get any kind of good flow numbers. honestly, if you just want something that's gonna work great outta the box and won't cost you an arm and a leg, i'd suggest you look into the TrickFlow heads...and more cam.

Yup, I gotta go with the flow here- you are looking at low 14's high 13's, which is ok if you have a stock appearing car, but an utter embarasment in a gutted car with skinnies and a cowl hood.

I ran a 14.12 @ 97 in 60* temps with my 3200lbs with me in the seat S10 with an 882 headed 8.3:1 S10 with a .477/.480 lift cam and 3.73 gears.

went to the track for first time

rt.429
60'..... 2.288
1/8..... 10.112
mph..... 73.87
1/4..... 15.414
mph..... 92.08

that was the worst run fpund out fuel pressure was only at 2psi

2nd run set fuel at 5psi took off alot better.

r/t.... 433
60' .....2.066
1/8..... 9.376
mph..... 76.66
1/4 .....14.475
mph..... 96.07

3rd run the best so far

r/t .....420
60'..... 2.093
1/8...... 9.163
mph .....78.20
1/4 .....14.219
mph......96.30

i havent yet put the performer rpm on it yet it has a stock aluminum one on it but no casting numbers. i have a turbo 400 with 3000 stall and shift kit to. do you think with these ill be able to brake 13s and do those numbers sound right. the exhaust i think is holding me back to beacuse from the header to the straight pipe is only 2" and after that its 2 1/2 do you think it would run better with open headers. im thinking about trading for long tubes and run them straight back and dump them before the rear end. thanks

long tubes will help for sure. and anything to help get the motor up into the power range quicker is a good thing (ie th400 with 3000stall). go to my cardomain site and look at the 3rd page and you can see my exhaust (true dual 2.5")

when are you gettin' better cylinder heads?

if you can budget another $100, you can pickup some TrickFlow aluminum heads that will outflow the sportsman II's hands frickin' down!

with the stock head gasket, that should make ur compression close to 9.1:1, much better. An L98 style head would flow a good bit better and should net you roughly 30 hp or more. thats low 13s with your combo. Porting would benefit on the side.

If you are on a budget try and put vortec heads and long tube headman headers on it. Look in the classifieds or ebay.

vortec heads are about 700 bucks with shipping. Complete L98 heads that flow about as good are a few hundred.

You can find the vortec heads used. As far as porformance gain I have used a few sets of vortecs and thay work really well Ie. stock rebilt short block from discount auto with new vortec heads stock hyd roller cam and 1.6 roller rockers 3.73 gear and a 2200 rpm converter = low 13 second pass.

well heck, thats not bad at all. Vortec heads are nice option. I know vortec 350s run very stout. had one in a 98 k-10 extended cab, it hauled.

For budget motors that are using small cams I like these heads better than the old dart or world cast iron heads. I had a set of world heads I bought new in 92 the heads were cleaned up and could not flow as good as the vortecs. But back then we didnt have many choices.

I assume you have a hyd. flat tappet cam. Invest in a 230 @ .050 duration cam (480 lift). Put some .015 head gaskets on it and roll.
