Tuning Tips

The car is a 1991 Trans Am GTA, 5.0 700R4 2.73 Posi.

Ok, i just had a bad experience at the drags. First time out with this car, I got a .964 RT. Pretty bad I know. Anyways I spun totally off the line for about a second while barely moving, just spinning pretty much, so I let off completely, and then ease away. So I ruined my start. I got back to pickup my timeslip and the car stalled 3 times. I let it cool down and picked up my timeslip and discovered I ran a 17.4 @ 82mph. Pretty bad I am thinking. So I go watch some more racing while the car cools off, then it starts raining like crazy so I didnt get to run again. I go to start my car and it stalls 3 more times. I manage to keep it running by holding the gas a bit. Anyways, so yesterday I check the timing, and find out it was retarded by about 8 degree's. So I advance it to about 8 degree's BTDC. (stock is 6 degrees, but I heard advancing a bit more is better as long as you avoid detonation). Is there anything else I should be checking to help my car run quicker? Or would the timing being that retarded slow me down that much? (plus the spinning, 3.2 second 60')

Re: Tuning Tips

2.0 60 ft time is easy with a stock car with a little practice on launches, so knock 1.2 off the time right away. letting off completely and then easing back on will kill your time. I'd say with the timing set right, and a little practice on launch you should be able to get a more reasonable mid 14s @ mid 90s.

Re: Tuning Tips

before you start tuning get slicks. you can't dial in a reliable times if you are spinning your tires.

Re: Tuning Tips

My trap speed when I raced was 82mph, but I am guessing that'll go up with my timing fixed. The car feels and pulls alot better now that it's fixed.

Re: Tuning Tips

make sure your ignition cap/rotor and coil are fresh. new plugs and wires help too to make sure your getting great ignition. 8 degrees base timing is perfect so thats a start. make sure you got clean fresh air filter and fuel filter

other than those basics, your car should be in good running condition and ready to go race

Re: Tuning Tips

Cap and rotor are new, wires are new, air filter is new, fuel filter could probably be changed soon, but should be alright.
