Nicked pistons

I figured you guys would know best...

I found a awesome deal on some 12.7:1 JE forged pistons, only problem is 2 of the pistons have some little nicks in them. Can they still be used? The guy told me they can be filed down and should be all set. Heres what they look like..

Re: Nicked pistons

have the set checked for wrist pin bore true-ness as well as make sure the ring lands haven't been compromised...i would still go two fresh pistons though..

Re: Nicked pistons

nothing would suck more than putting some money into a car and having a piston come apart because you used a questionable part. better safe than sorry

Re: Nicked pistons

If it looked like damage that had happened from rough handling while the piston was out I'd say it's probably no problem, but that looks like there was debris in the combustion chamber.

Re: Nicked pistons

If the pistons check out as good you can sand them down and smooth them out and if there are only two pistons bad call JE give them the part # and order two pistons. And I hope thay are not custom pistons you will pay dearly and have a min order.

yeah, they normally want like $100 or so a piece with a minimum buy of 4 or something like that...it's crazy...

Re: Nicked pistons

Something has been through the engine, could have been a rock or something. I had a vent tube come out of the rear of my holley a few years ago. It damaged a couple of pistons like that. I just cleaned them up and used them. They were still in the engine when the crank broke, and they survied that too. Check the ring lands very carefully.

Re: Nicked pistons

The guy is selling the set for $100, even if I hafta buy 2 new ones through summit theyre only 120/each. Thanks for the input guys, really appreciate this. JE's website says that they make 12.7:1 with a 9.00 deck block, my block has never been decked so can I expect the compression to be a little bit lower?

Re: Nicked pistons

The ringlands and skirts look MINT. My only thing is, on JE's website it says deck height 9" my block hasnt been zero decked and is still 9.025" can I still use these? I know the compression will be down into the mid 11's if I can.

Re: Nicked pistons

You are fine to use them. Most shelf pistons for sbc that I am aware of are made for a 9'' deck.
