I found a pair of E.T. Streets for sale and I was wondering if they're too big to fit under the car? If they do what back spacing do the rims need?
I have 5.5 backspace 10 inch rims. 28x9 ET Drag fit with lots of room. The ET Street tires are measured at the sidewall not the tread so your the total tire width is 12.5 while my 9" wide slick may be close to 11" wide at the sidewalls. 28x12.5 "should" fit but if they don't then a little massaging of the inner fender with a hammer will make them fit.
If I go to a 30" tire, I think the widest I can go without rubbing is 10 or 11". That would totally fill the wheel wells.

461 Big Block installed and ready for the 2001 racing season
Best results before the 383 blew up
Best ET on a time slip: 11.857 altitude corrected to 11.163
Best MPH on a time slip: 117.87 altitude corrected to 126.10
Altitude corrected rear wheel HP based on power to weight ratio: 476.5
Best 60 foot: 1.662
Racing at 3500 feet elevation but most race days it's over 5000 feet density altitude!

I also run the 28x9 ET Drags (not sure of the back spacing off hand) and there is plenty of room. Like Stephen said, the ET streets are measured differntly than the ET drags.
Will they fit? You will need the right backspacing on the wheels, but it will still be close I think.

what kind of power are you making and what gears are you running?
that is a big damn tire, yes it will fit rather well actually. it's just that if you are stepping up from a normal street tire, usually between 25.5 and 26 inches tall to a 28inch tall tire will kill your gear advantage.

When I was running 26" tires, I was using 3.27 gears. My powerband required about a 3.90 gear which just wasn't an option. When I switched to 28" tires, I also went to 4.10 gears. When I eventually go to 30" tires, I'll be using 4.56 gears. Each gear/tire combination works out the same in the 1/4 mile.
The difference in choices are that the lower gear has more torque multiplication to get the car moving and the taller tire gives a bigger contact patch on the ground when compared to a similar width smaller diameter tire. That's why you see very tall tires on Stock Eliminator cars. They're only allowed a 9" slick so the taller the tire is, the more rubber is on the ground. Then it's just a matter of determining the gear ratio required for your power band.
