Took the TA for a ride, started knocking. Funny it waited till it was in another car. Will never know the results, so that makes me sad.

Re: Knocking 6.0
It is all good, ony thing I regret is that I did not get to tothe track as planned. Which was in 7 days...

Going to see what the damage is and if I can rebuild at a decent price. If not, junkyard round 2 6.0. Friend is offering up his 446 ci LSx block with ls7 heads. Maybe I'll do that for now.

lots of breakage happening in the TGO camp, lol. sounds like 2013 is going to pay dearly for taking our hotrods away in 2012!

You will hopefully be fine. It is the rest of you parts you need to worry about, lol.

Diggler, motor was untouched. Just swapped from the 6 speed 89 RS to the th400 86 TA.

Re: Knocking 6.0
Thanks man, I will see what can be saved. Have a 4.8 I could throw in that has 243 heads. Wonder how it would react to a Trex cam? Lol

Re: Knocking 6.0
My buddy has done trex twin turbo 4.8. Didnt last long but it was an animal haha. It idles at about 2-3 inches of Hg lol. It would spin 8000+ with trex. The old 230 deg cam peaked at 7400-7500 i believe so a trex 240's cam is gonna spin up

Re: Knocking 6.0
Of course I read this thread right before going to the track, everyone is breaking lately...Paranoia at it's finest.

After my second pass, I smelled something new, and it didn't smell good. Keeping in mind this and the other threads, I decided to just drive home and not push her too hard. Not going to worry about it though, a swap is coming soon. Was a good little 305 for the 6 months I beat the hell out of it.

Re: Knocking 6.0
haha, yeah, i'm thinking of throwing my heads/cam/intake on a 4.8 or 5.3 if the damage is more than the cost of a junkyard shortblock.

Re: Knocking 6.0
I want to see how much that 4.8 can hold but am not exactly that much into seeing if my single springs will hold without valve float. The worst part would be destroying the 243 heads. So, I may swap them for the ported 853s and port the 243s for the next 6.0 or whatever serious engine goes in the TA next.

Re: Knocking 6.0
wonder if you'd need to flycut the 4.8 since it has flattop pistons

Re: Knocking 6.0
I wondered the same, the 853 are not milled. So that would help.

Re: Knocking 6.0
Yeah theres been quite a few reports of 4.8's spinning 7500 rpm. Some stock so with rod bolts.

Id do rod bolts for sure as any cam heads setup on that few cubes will spin up

Re: Knocking 6.0
It is all up in the air. If I did the 446, I would need a intake. Rather not buy one if it will not be used for a long time. I don't even want to pull the engine from working so hard on so many cars right now. Kind of burned out. I do at least want to pull it and break it down. See what can be done.

Wouldnt be the first time you built a high revving, small v8.

Re: Knocking 6.0
Man, really really tempted to try the 4.8 with ported heads, but then I would have to yank it from the truck. Have the 4.8 for the camaro that is a older piece...why the hell did I sell the spare 2008 4.8?...

Re: Knocking 6.0
Later years came with stronger rods and 243 heads. They make better platforms

And you are telling this to a ls1tech moderator, why? Lol

The newer engines are more expensive because of what they are as well.

Check converter bolts - they have done that to me few times past following motor/trans separation.. Can hope that's all anyway, the 2 times it happened to me sounded like motor knock.. But usually that goes away under load. Hope no major issues.

Re: Knocking 6.0
Hey, at least I did not kill a built motor. No biggie.

87 TA, the oil pressure took a dump, and the 7/16 converter bolts are more than tight, lol.
Thanks for the hope.

Yeah its amazing it lived this long the way you beat on that thing. That thing rpms. Had to die eventually. To bad it had to die before seeing what it could do in an auto

I would love to get away with a hone, bearings, turn the crank, resize rods with ARP and slap it back together. Maybe port the 317s out.

Yep. Just going to sit in the crank spacer. Sold the last for 20$ With flex plate... Because it would forever be behind a t56 right?

Re: Knocking 6.0
Just took the ol girl apart, number one and two, one is so far gone in the bearing that the piston kissed the exhaust valve enough to knock the carbon off and barely scratch the piston. So, glad to know I should need to line bore my spare 6.0 block. Cam looks ok.

Re: Knocking 6.0
Depends where you find the deal. That one was 700$ intake to oil pan. Got my money's worth. Lol.

If I had to buy another I would go for a LY6. But I'm good with the spare from the crushed 3/4 Ton.
