First of all only slicks need to be heated up in a burnout to get the oils in them heated up and make the rubber sticky. A street tire doesn't have these oils, the rubber is harder and the rubber is designed NOT to heat up especially on speed rated tires. Doing a burnout with street tires just produces smoke as the rubber is worn off. It does little to nothing for traction and decreases the life of the tires.
The key to a proper burnout is wheel speed. With an automatic that doesn't have a manual valve body start in first gear. As soon as the tires start to spin shift to second. Before coming out of the water box shift to third and gradually lift off the gas pedel. A sudden decelleration of the tires can hurt the transmission. If the automatic has a manual valve body then start in second or third gear and do the same thing as above.
With a standard tranny start in a higher gear. With a typical 4 speed tranny a burnout is done in second or third gear.

I have to disagree, a short burnout with street tires will help traction. It will clean off all the dirt and debris the tires have picked up driving up to the starting line. You can also get softer street tires that will benefit.

for most street radials all you need is a quick hop to take all the junk off the tires. if you do an actual burn out you are going to make the tires more slippery. street radials have a rather low operating temp, it does not take much to get thtem out of their operating range.
