TPI swap: MAF vs. SD
TPI swap: MAF vs. SD
Greetings! I am planning on upgrading from 4.3V6 TBI in my S15 4x4 to a 350 TPI setup, and was wondering which route to take? I understand MAF is better for accepting mods, but how much better? The vehicle will be a daily driver year round, so I need reliability and fuel economy (reasonably decent). The engine wouldn't be anything overly wild, just maybe a mild cam and some decent street heads (I've thought about the Vortec base and Vortec heads). I assume I need to replace the ECM, Prom and harness to do all this, so that is planned as well. Any help would be great. Thanks!

MAF is the more advanced technology, however, the MAF on the f-body cars is very outdated, and the speed density system is actually more advanced. People often go from MAF to SD on our cars.

Re: TPI swap: MAF vs. SD

This topic has been beat to death. The 90-93 speed density is better than the 85-89 MAF, but the 94+ MAF is better than the 90-93 speed density. The thirdgen computers are sensitive to the duration of the camshaft. Increase the intake duration larger than about 212, and you'll need a custom chip to keep it from running rich or lean, regardless of which computer system you have.
