vortec universal sbc kit

hey guys i just installed a vortec v3 si kit from jegs on my 92 lo3 camaro.i thought id share a few things. the power steering pulley will not clear your steering box and your hood will not close.i had some freinds make me a pulley out of the stock one and a mustang four cylinder crank pulley.its a completly stock engine lol.i wont be able to get it tuned for a while but when i do ill post up some numbers.

What is the kit number and how much did it cost?

Vortech's install manual left a lot to be desired.

Are you going to use the braided SS SC drain line?

I assume he iss using the new 2000 dollar universal kit from Jegs. The head unit is self contained. No need for oil lines. Thanks for posting up some info I have been contemplating this kit for a while now. would of had it already had I not broke my 10 bolt.

What kept the hood from closing? Do you have some pics?

i've got the self-lubricated V-3 head unit on mine. looks like Vortech has their $250 rebate deal going again:

that is the kit i bought. vortec does not offer the 250 rebate on it though. i do have some pics but havn't figured how to post them.i can send them to someones e-mail if theyll post up a address. also your upper radiator hose will not work.i used the waterneck off a tbi truck.i cut the hose and found a peice of pipe that would slide into it to make it work.work is really busy so no tune or dyno time yet.

how much boost are you seeing on your vorteh 90 l98 ?do have a bypass valve on yours?

Thank you for the pictures. Very Awesome. So what part hits the hood. I was not planning on using there carb bonnet as I have an ATI one. I was also going to fab my own elbow. Can you re clock the SC so the outlet is lower? How bad was the Power steering interferance? Would an underdrive pulley work? I need to do this anyway cause I keep over spinning my alternators and cooking the bearings.

the outlet of the supercharger hits the hood. i beleive it would be easy to reclock it but i dont know if the pipe between the supercharger and bonnet would still work. im not really worried about it because i plan to reclock mine and add a intercooler. i didnt save my old power steering pulley so i cant measure to see how big of a pulley would work. the guy who did my pulley said a 2.3 4cyl ford power steering pulley with the center bored out to fit the stock chevy pump would probably work just fine.i thought he told me he used a crank pulley but he said it was a power steering pulley he used on mine.

I get 10 - 12 psi when i get heavy on the gas. superchargersonline substituted the V-3 for the V-1 or V-2 that normally come with the 82-92 F-body kit. i think it may be more efficient since the F-body kit is only to supposed to put out 6-8 psi or so (best I can tell anyway). i was afraid i was getting too much boost so i replaced the 3.48" SC pulley that came with the kit to a 3.60" pulley but that didn't reduce the boost much. then a guy on GTA source page said he ran an SC on his stock block with 18 psi boost so i decided maybe 10 - 12 is safe for occaisional use. put the 3.48" pulley back on when i did my first SC lubricant change.

the Vortech 82-92 F-body kit does not come with a bypass valve. i added a Bosch bypass valve this year using the kit from Vortech/superchargersonline (you can get most of the parts at your local Home Depot for a lot less $$).

I drilled the SC output plenum and plastic 90 degree SC input elbow with a 59/64" bit and tapped them with 3/4"-14 NPT pipe tap. The vacuum line on the right side of the valve tees into the same manifold pressure line my boost gauge and fuel management unit are connected to.

Do any of you guys have any pics of the vortech mounting bracket that comes with the kit? I bought an s-trim lt1 kit used, and am looking for a tpi style bracket to mount it to my car.

Looks like the bracket part number is 4GF011-021. You might want to check with Vortech, superchargersonline, and other big vendors who used to carry the '82 - '92 F body kit to see if they have a spare one gathering dust.

Bracket 4GF011-021 bolts onto the engine. Then you bolt the power steering pump to the back surface of mounting plate 4GF111-021. You bolt the plate/pump assembly to the bracket and install the alternator down low between the inside surface of the plate and the engine. There are ~16 holes in that mounting plate - that's why i labeled them for bolt sizes when i did my install.

There's a list of all the parts for the bracket assembly on page vii of the install manual and drawings of how it all goes togther on pages 6 and 7.

hood shuts fine. the bracket thats bolted to the supercharger i had made. it moved the supercharger toward the driver fender 2" and down 2".i left the alternator in the same place vortech had it .the new bracket is made of 1/2" thick mild steel which is thicker than the vortech bracket but i didnt want it flexing

my only suggestion is to relocate the air filter so it isnt taking in the heat from the engine bay and exhaust manifold..........i thought about this kit before i decided to go turbo........i didnt feel like waiting the 2-3 weeks for it to be in stock before i received one........but by the time my turbo setup was done i couldve just waited for that kit.oh well.........least its done either way
