im in cali too and as far as i know i doubt you'll be able to get away with that at all if you have to smog it and im not sure if there is anything you can do to make it pass short of pulling all the goodies off it. it sucks, i know. the best way i could think of to pass that engine would be to smoke out someone at the smog shop for like a month and hope for the best. as for a copy of the laws, i have been looking for some time now and still havnt found anything of any help. if you find anything let me know.

The only mods you can do to the engine are invisible/internal ones, and those that have C.A.R.B. exemption. I've failed visual inspections with my '86 TA/LG4 just for not having the heat stove tubing that goes from the exhaust sheild up to the air cleaner housing. The only way you will pass with such blatant performance enhancers is to be married to the inspector.

Well being that I AM a Tech and i'm only about a year away from my smog license i can tell you strait up. I'm posting from my puter next to my bay as I'm at work right now, so I asked a smog tech to make sure I'm right)

That type of setup will pass smog emissions. I have an ATI ProCharger and it has the C.A.R.B. exemption number right on the blower itself. That makes it pass visual. And a blower setup that is done correctly will pass emission actually CLEANER then without the blower. As long as EVERY peice of smog equipment is hooked up AND functional. The rest of the engine can be along these lines.

1) A good free flowing set of heads that isnt too extreme to run on the street will actually make for better emissions too. More effieciant combustion chamber will result in cleaner tailpipe emissions. But start going too radical and you can fall over the "cliff" pretty fast. If the heads are aluminum or otherwise visually differant from the stock heads you need to make sure those heads come with a C.A.R.B. exemption stick that you stick somewhere under the hood so the tech does not fail you for visual.

2) A decently mild cam. Minimal valve overlap is good for blowers and nitrous so as to not bleed of boost and N20 and its also good for not letting hydrocarbons out the exhaust unburned. Again good for emissions. My cam is a mild .500/.510 lift 210/220 duration (@ .050) with a good 114 degrees of lobe seperation. A good blower cam AND good for retaining emissions legality. Plus if the tech hears any noticible lope in the idle hes going to get suspicious fast and be looking for the same CARB sticker for a cam. My cam isnt technically smog legal as it never was CARB approved but it idles smooth and will pass emissions. Only the most mild cams you can imagine will actually come with a CARB exempt sticker. So dont worry about that.

3) Intake. Whatever is either visually stock appearing or is CARB exempt again. Being that the intake is right in your face you are pretty much going to need CARB exempt one. (or stock as blowers overcome intake deficiancies pretty easy)

4) exhaust. Headers are fine as long as again they have the smog exempt sticker or metal plate on them. On my car I have the SLP 1 3/4" headers with the AIR injection so as to make them smog legal. And anything from the cats back are open to any mods you want to do since it has no effact on smog. I run fully functional dual CATCO 3 stage cats with air injection. So I'm legal there too.

Follow those guidlines and you should be ok as long as you dont get a TOTAL dick for a tech also.

Or you can drive up here to roseville and I'll smog your car next year.
