Turbo vs. Supercharger (Newbie Question)
Turbo vs. Supercharger (Newbie Question)
Ok I currently am building about a 450hp N/A engine. I'm no trying to decide weither to do a twin turbo setup or a supercharged setup. Price, amount of work, etc, etc aren'ta consern I want the most possible power. I plan on running 9-12psi of boost. What is everybodys opinion.
2 - T3 or T4 Turbos
1 - D1SC ATI supercharger.
Also both will be twin intercooled no matter which way I go. and I know I'll have to fab my own TT setup but like I said money and work and stuff isn't a concern. Just want the most power. Thanks for everybodys help.

The ATI Procharger comes in a kit for our cars. As far as I know there is no such options for turbos.
I have no idea which is really better. I got a complete T3 turbo for about 20$ and I am deciding that stuff for myself. I don't know if it would be worth doing the fab work to install it. Since I already have the expensive parts I think it would be cheaper than the ATI kit.
I don't know. I am going to do my engine swap first. But I don't know which would be better. Or what the difference really is between the two.
Maybe someone can give us a list of pros and cons.

I don't really have any experience with either superchargers or turbochargers, but I do happen to know at least a little bit about each (Research paper for college, and a general interest). Superchargers are cheaper and easier to maintain since they are self contained, oil and everything, but they can also illegidly place a stress on the crankshaft and main bearings due to the belt drive even though i have never heard of this being a problem. Superchargers are also rather limited in the amount of power that they can produce, true you can change the output with different sized pulleys, and if you have a particular power level in mind, and you want the neck snapping acceleration from the moment you hit the gas, then a supercharger is for you. A turbo system on the other hand is much more complicated, you need to run oil lines to the turbo, manifolds and piping need to be custom fabricated, they can take up more space in the engine bay depending on the setup. Turbos also have the ability to produce much more power than superchargers, since they are not directly attatched to the engine by means of a belt, and are powered by the energy in the exhaust gases that are normally wasted. If you want to increase power, crank up the boost with a boost controller. Unfortunately, unless the turbo system is designed to perfectly match your car and engine, and i mean perfectly, when you step on the gas you might have to wait a second or too to build up boost before you get your power. There are of course other things that are involved in making this decision but that depends on each individual, and how much work they want to do and how much money they want to spend. I personally would choose a turbo setup over a supercharger, even with the extra hastle, just because they are so much cooler in my opinion. I hope this is what you wanted to know, can't help you with the choice between T3 and T4 or ATI. And if you knew all this already, then I am really sorry that I wasted all of this space playing the role of captain obvious.

If you want the most (most of what? Your town, track, or state?) power, why limit yourself to 9-12 psi? Run lower compression, coat the internals, and increase your boost for more fun. Look at Monty's 427tt Corvette for a great example.
There is never "most" without a caveat... If $ and time is not limiting, you can push boundaries and get well over 1000 hp. At that point, you couldn't put it all to the ground on the street anyways. If you have a budget already in mind (whether it's $7,000 or $70,000), you can work to that, anf folks can offer more constructive suggestions.

I find the technical information on the Turbo Vs. Supercharger most enlightening.
For example I knew that the you had to deal with Turbo lag and that the Supercharger didn't. But I did not know about the stress thing and the advantages of one over the other. I can see where larger turbos could procude more top end without providing that lower end help that you would get out of a supercharger.
For our cars it's important to note that there is no turbo kit that I am aware of whereas with a supercharger we have a couple kits to chose from. Vortech and ATI. I think Paxton makes one also?! Not sure on that.
Good information.

honestly, the turbo lag that is experienced with turbos shouldn't really be too much of a problem on a v8.
the way i see it is that if you run twin turbos on lets say a 400ci small block, the turbo lag would actually make the car driveable. the v8s also shouldn't have any sort of problem with low end power anyway. just when the turbos kick in, you will really know it
