Mass Air Question

I have a buddy thats working on a paxton install on a mass air camaro (86 or 87 I think). He bought the car with the motor out of it and it included the supercharger. Since the original owner managed to blow the thing up I'm concerned about this supercharger install. Its an older paxton kit that mounts on the passenger side and has a pair of little V belts that drive it. There was no FMU supplied and I though that was funny... I've installed supercharger kits on mass air mustangs and FMU's are a requirement. As far as we know they are the stock injectors. Does this thing require a FMU to work? Whats the scoop with getting the correct fuel with a boosted mass air car?

I have an 88 firebird, (mass air car) and when I origonally bought my s-trim kit, it did come with a FMU. Every time I changed injectors, I installed the coresponding diafram & washer.
I think it would be safe to say you need an FMU with any forced induction system if retaining the factory computer.

I bought my car with a paxton already installed(older kit for 89 camaro sn92). It didn't have and FMU. I don't know if the previous owner or installer was lazy or if it just wasn't included inthe kit. The prevuious owner did go through the trouble of installing a walboro pump, so my guess is that the FMU wasn't included. The fuel pressure was set to ~60psi and it ran pretty good the way it was set up, but honestly I would feel safer with a FMU.

I ended up converting to a holley commander 950 with 2 bar map.

IMO, FMU's are bandaids, to get you past not having enough injector.

Doing anything marginal with boosted motors is asking for trouble.

A better answer is swapping over to bigger injectors, and the ecm out of a Syclone. That way you can actually have a system designed for running boost. Yep, it's alot more work to do this, but it's right when it's done. Be sure to add a fuel pump to your shopping list.

And with the other ecm you also get timing control for when in boost.
