Winter single turbo project

I finally have the time and money to install a single turbo. So far, I’ve done a lot of research using this board, turbomustangs, and the turbochargers and maximum boost books. The plan is to run a maximum of 9psi, intercooled, on a stock 305 motor.

An area that I am having trouble understanding is the fuel system. Currently, I have the stock mechanical fuel pump that feeds the carb. I’m gonna keep the carb setup, but use a blow through holley instead. For the amount of psi that I plan to make, will the mech. fuel pump be able to supply a high enough volume of fuel to avoid going lean under boost? (after boost referencing it)

Guess I found my own answer: http://www.turbomustangs.com/forums/...mech+fuel+pump
For the price of a new carter mech. pump from summit (~$60), I might as well just replace the stock one and not have to worry.

On to my next question:

I plan on buying a holley 600 double pumper and making it blow-through. New from summit is $300 and I've seen them go on ebay for around $75. It was recommended to me to go new b/c of issues with used holley carbs, but I want to hear what everyone here has to say. Anyone have experience with this?

Maybe it will be easier to put what I have done so far and try to get comments/suggestions from there. I plan on doing all the installation myself, but I'll probably have to pay a shop to weld the exhaust manifolds for me. The turbo is the only thing I bought so far.

Here's the list:

Turbocharge! (~$1,565)

1) Turbo ($235)
a) 1.05 A/R turbine
b) Clockable housing
c) Turbine: T6 inlet/4” outlet, Compressor: 4” inlet/2½” outlet

2) Oil feed (~$40)
a) ¼” line from oil pump to turbo ($5)
b) ¾” line from turbo to oil pan ($10)
c) Misc. fittings ($25)

3) Exhaust plumbing (~$150)
a) From driver-side manifold: 2½” pipe w/ thermal expansion sleeve
b) Collector (to join exhaust from both sides)
c) Flange ($20)
d) From turbo: 3” down pipe

4) Turbo headers ($100)
a) C4 Corvette headers ($70)
b) Weld new pipe -- similar to JoBy's ($30)

5) Wastegate ($250)
a) Tubing and flanges from turbo exhaust inlet to wastegate to down-pipe ($30)
b) Boost reference to bonnet

6) Cold-side plumbing (~$200)
a) 4” cone air filter ($20)
b) From turbo: 2½” to intercooler to carb ($15)
c) 2½” from intercooler to carb bonnet ($15)
d) Carb bonnet: 2½” inlet, 5” base, 3½” max height ($150)

7) Intercooler ($250)
a) Dimensions: 24”x12”x3”, 2½” inlet/outlet
b) High efficiency (thermal, pressure)

8) Blow-through carb ($125)
a) Holley 600 double pumper, mechanical secondaries ($75)
b) Rebuild kit ($33)
c) Various jet sizes ($42)

9) Fuel system ($100)
a) Dual feed fuel line to carb, fuel filter ($25)
b) Carter mechanical fuel pump ($65)
c) Boost reference pump to bonnet ($10)

10) Gauges ($115)
a) Boost: gauge and sending unit – reference to bonnet ($65)
b) Fuel pressure: gauge and sending unit ($50)
c) (optional) Exhaust temperature: gauge and sending unit ($150)

Is there anything that I am missing?

where did you find a turbo header for a $100?

I didn't. I'm planning on making my own the same way that JoBy made them from corvette headers for his single turbo. One thing I noticed though was that he used 2 drivers-side headers to keep the header for the turbo low and the other one high to clear the power steering. So I might have to buy 2 sets of headers unless I'm able to flip the other one around somehow.
