Junkyard turbo hunting

What sort of things can i look for when choising a junkyard turbo? Apart from shaftplay is there anyother signs of a dead snail?

I've found a good donor for my turbo Humma project but dont have the facilities to get a turbo re-built.

I don't know much about this stuff. But make sure you look into the turbine housing to check for cracks. Some I have come across are bad. Some have a few cracks, but decent. Check the wastegate actuator if it has one. Pull on it and see if it pushes out some air. Look how much burned oil is caked in the oil passages.

Rebuild?? You mean do it yourself or send it out? I searched the web on how to rebuild them and it doesn't look too hard to do. Simply hand tools and a torch maybe if the turbine housing is really rusted on the center section. The V-band turnines seem to come apart rather easy from my very limited experience.

The pic in your sig......is it a stock hood? How did you make out with that hood clearance thing you were finishing up?

Nah mate, it didnt fit under a stock hood. And the hood I was making turned out so ugly im too ashamed to put it on the web. The sig pic was pre-turbo.

Im still trying to find another hood to play with. This time im just going to cut the shape hole i need to close it adn have the 'goodies' sticking out. I can still use the UGLY HOOD to pass rego etc, so its all good.

I think the small bubble in the hood over the turbo will look good. I think the Talon cars had that from the factory and it looks fine.
It kind of bites when you have a lot of work into something and don't like it in the end. I went through that making some fenders to fit some 44" swamper boogers on a truck. I hacked the fenders up cutting and welding only find that they were too ugly to install.

Are you looking at diesel turbos for the truck?

Cool. It looks like you are into custom fender work too. Have you checked out www.dune-buggy.com. Lots of JY turbos listed for an engine that size. Isn't that the same girl from your turbo setup.
