Procharged LT1 coming soon
Procharged LT1 coming soon
I'm just waiting on some final parts to arrive to finish my 383 LT1 buildup. Over the years I know numerous people have wanted to supercharge their LT1 swaps but there has never been a kit developed that allows for a bolt-on installation like there is for the L98 or LT1 cars. I'm working around this by going with a universal EFI Procharger kit and LT1 crank pulley, and modifying the bracket that comes with the kit or making my own if need be. The plan is to mount the head unit up high on the driver's side like the L98 kit but using the correct LT1 lower pulley. kit should arrive end of this week or early next week
My build-up is as follows:
Engine:
'94 LT1 block, converted to 4-bolt splayed mains with Callies main caps
Victory Racing Engines Victory Lane rotating assembly
-Callies Dragonslayer 3.75" crank
-Callies Compstar 6" rods
-Diamond 31cc dish forged pistons
Advanced Induction ported Trickflow LT1 heads
-62cc chambers
-215cc runners
-unknown flow numbers as of yet, should be 300+ on the intake
Advanced Induction ported LT1 intake
Advanced Induction custom grind blower cam
BBK 58mm throttle body
Hawk's 3rd Gen longtube headers
Mufflex 4" cat-back with Spintech muffler
Fuel System
60# Mototron fuel injectors
Stock fuel rails with -8AN feed line, -6AN return, Magnafuel regulator
LS1 fuel tank
Lonnies Performance dual in-tank fuel pumps with boost reference
-8AN feed, stock feed as a return line
Power added:
Procharger F-1
Snow Performance methanol injection kit
Drivetrain:
Spec Stage 3 clutch
T-56 with upgraded synchros, shift forks, shift fork pads
Stainless 3" driveshaft with 1350 yokes
strengthened 9-bolt rear with TA Performace girdle, welded axle tubes and adjustable brace
nothing stickier than Nittos going on the car until I get a 9" this winter.
looking to pulley for 15# of boost after break-in, should be in the neighborhood of 700rwhp

Re: Procharged LT1 coming soon
hmm never heard of anyone referencing intank pump...not sure how well that work, there is alot of footage to cover to have a reference line coming from the front to back....why not just use a BR regulator?
Re: Procharged LT1 coming soon
my pump description was a little misleading I guess. it's not boost referenced in the normal sense that it increases fuel pressure with boost pressure. a hobbs switch is connected to a vacuum source and once boost pressure reaches 5psi, the second pump is turned on. during normal and part throttle driving, the second pump is off. once you get into boost, then the other pump comes on.

Re: Procharged LT1 coming soon
makes much more sense, thats actually a great idea. Thanks for explaining it. im assuming the FPR is boost referenced then
Re: Procharged LT1 coming soon
sure is. I've got a MagnaFuel EFI regulator on order with 1:1 boost reference. will allow up to 85psi. should do the job just fine

let me know how you like that magnafuel regulator, and pump setup, i'm looking into doing a t-70'd l98 car here soon. i'm running the aeromotive 13202 (everyone does) and a magnafuel prostar 500 pump on my blow through, works good.

Re: Procharged LT1 coming soon
I would like to use the same setup that you are running with the ls1 fuel tank I think it is like 20lbs lighter then the stock. Can I use the harness from lonnies performace or does it have to be custom made? My build is almost identical to yours ecept Mine is a 383 l98 4blt main patroit 210 cc heads 8-1 comperssion, comp custom ground blower cam, accel super ram with the d1sc procharger.
Re: Procharged LT1 coming soon
I talked it over with lonnie and he said I just needed to send the 3rd gen fuel pump/sender pigtail with the LS1 pump and sender and he'd include the correct wiring for it.
Re: Procharged LT1 coming soon
got the new -8AN feed line ran and got the -6AN to 3/8" hardline fitting installed on the factory feedline to be used as the return. Going to pull the factory fuel filter and cut the line to run straight back instead of making the turn and I'm installing a Jegs -8AN inline fuel filter in its place on a custom mounting plate. got the mounting plate for the regulator fabbed and attached to the reg, just waiting to get the engine in to install it on the firewall.
still trying to figure out how to get the factory hardline fitting out of the LT1 fuel rail so that I can weld on my -8AN weld fittings. hope to have most of the fuel system finished up tomorrow, still waiting on my pump from Lonnie so I can fab up the tank fuel connections and get the tank installed. will be taking photos along the way when I start installing everything.

Id like to see pics of the car and installs
Re: Procharged LT1 coming soon
I could have kissed the FedEx lady today when she delivered:

j88 - turns out the install is going to take longer than expected. I heard from my machinist today and I won't be getting the engine back until end of next week. I leave the following weekend to go back to school
I'm going to try and at least get the engine running before I head back, but I'm doubting I'll have exhaust on it and have no plans to get it running on the blower, although I will at least get the bracket installed. probably keep the blower in the box nice and safe until I get back.

sounds like a kick *** build.:Im biased:
I have a 383 Lt1 thats gonna see some boost also just form a large turbo.

I'm going to try and take as many photos as I can along the way. trying to get the fuel system finshed as much as I can until I get my pumps back and can mount the tank. still screwing around with the fuel rail to get the factory hard line out of it so I can weld on an -8AN fitting.

my engine just got finished today 383 8-1 compression, eagle h-beam rods, keith black pistons, crane gold 1.6 roller rockers, comp custom ground blower cam, patroit 210cc heads, accel super ram, ect I am hoping to have the money for the procharger d1sc 3 core intercooled kit in a couple months. How much more would it cost for the F1?
Re: Procharged LT1 coming soon
I'm pretty sure the F1 is only like a $300 upgrade or something around there. it uses the D1SC bracket so the head unit is all thats different.

I called ati yesterday and they said I could not run an f1 on my 88? I guess the lt1 brackets are different.
Re: Procharged LT1 coming soon
not sure about that. I'm not using an LT1 or L98 bracket though so I may be doing a work around. I know the F1 and F1A fit in the same bracket as the D1SC though

Procharged LT1 coming soon
UPDATE:
So this has been a long, hard road. I've FINALLY got the engine assembled and the blower mounted up. Had to make an adapter to mount the lower pulley to the LT1 balancer. CAD drawings are available to anyone that wants them. I've got a few minor things to finish on the engine before it's ready to go back in the frame.
The fuel system is basically complete. I finshed up running the lines, got the new filter mounted, tank is complete, just need to get a fuel filler neck and connector. Going to wait to mount the pressure regulator until I get the engine in the car.
Still haven't touched the transmission yet
it's still in about 50 pieces awaiting a rebuild.
Should be able to have the engine sitting in the frame by the end of next week. We'll see.

sounds good. check out my thread I got my car done 620 to the wheels
Re: Procharged LT1 coming soon
Making more progress now. The engine is about 99% complete now, just missing a few minor things that got lost in the 2 years since it was torn down.
Sorting out the supercharger bracket right now to see how much I need to space it out.
Going to have to fab up a coil bracket, probably put it on the back of the supercharger mount.
Ordered the methanol kit as well as the exhaust. Hope the exhaust gets here in time before I head back to school. I'm going to be highly pissed if exhaust is all that holds me back from taking it back with me.
Got the tune on order, so that should be here this week.
Hit a small snag when I had to get the intake milled since the block was decked. Looks like it should fit good now, just going to have to use a little more Permatex than I expected to seal the front and rear of the lifter valley.
I'll try and get some updated photos this week once I get everything back out of the shop from the tropical storm.

PHOTOS!!!

I think I've got the engine about 99% ready to go back into the frame. Just need to get the rest of the car ready now
The plan now is to get the tank mounted and fuel system finished up tomorrow, get the transmission put back together Thursday, and hopefully get the engine back into the car on Friday. If all that works out, I hope I can at least start it this weekend. We'll see. With the way the rest of the project has gone I'm not going to hold my breath. Just glad to be making serious headway.
The last photo shows the alignment of the supercharger pulleys, obviously considerably off. Part of this is due to the 3/8" the crank pulley is spaced out from the adapter I had to have made to attach it to the LT1 balancer. The rest of it is due to the fact this is a universal kit on an LT1, didn't have any hopes of it lining up anyway. When I pull the bracket back off to install the spacers I think I'm going to mount the ignition coil on the back side of the bracket to keep it near the original location. Should work out pretty well.

got the exhaust in today...
4" doesn't sound so big when you read it in the catalog, but wow, when I opened the box the first thing I thought of was it was something that belonged in my brother's new 3500HD Silverado
hope this fits under the car. Not sure how I'm going to fab up the y-pipe yet, going to have to put some thought into that.

More progress! Finally!
Fuel tank is in temporarily. Had to extend the harness to the factory fuel pump connection as the new pump pigtail wasn't long enough.
Fuel lines are about 75% finished, got a couple more connections to make and need to finish the clamps along the frame rail.
Transmission is apart nearly 100%. Need to take the mainshaft out to the machinist tomorrow to get 2nd and 3rd gear pressed off. Waiting for bronze shift fork pads and billet synchro keys to come in this week before it goes back together. Considering taking the transmission case up and having it powdercoated while I'm waiting.
Probably start on the front brakes tomorrow. Got some LS1 calipers and caliper brackets, need to pull the spindles off and take the rotors out to be machined as well as make the modifications to the spindles. Probably be able to get all of that finished tomorrow and the next day.
The goal is to have the engine and transmission sitting back between the frame rails by the end of the weekend. I'm ordering a Spec Stage 3+ clutch disc tomorrow so I'll have to wait for that go get in before everything is permanently bolted back together, but I need to get to work on the new transmission crossmember too.
Going to be a busy break.

Re: Procharged LT1 coming soon
Got the front brakes torn down. Rotors are at the machinist getting turned into hubs. Waiting for the new brake brackets to get here, should be in tomorrow. Should finish modifying the spindles tonight. Also got the wheels off and got all of the tires dismounted so I can send them out to get powdercoated. Should be nice and new looking when I get them back.
Still waiting on transmission parts. Hope they're here Thursday.
Been putting off the fuel lines. Turning into a major pain in the ***. Ugh. Probably try and get the AFR and boost gauges mounted and wired in tomorrow while I wait on parts.

more updates

Engine is sitting in temporarily. Test fitting the Hawk's long tubes and the blower. Got the transmission case bolted back together so I can form the trans crossmember and the y-pipe. Hope to have those finished up tomorrow. More photos will follow.
The only issue I've found up top is I'm going to have to reroute one of the heater lines to clear the valve cover. Other than that, looks like everything clears.

Lookin' good man! Can't wait to see it in person!
Not to criticize, but I will suggest a couple of quick things...
First, while the motor is still mocked up and easily pulled, you should take it out and clean/paint engine bay, even if it's with shake shake. I wish I would have done that when I did my motor......
Next, I would ditch the opti-spark and go with the MSD coil pack conversion or equivalent...

Think you might be able to have it running by the time we have the summer meet? More importantly, do you think you will be able to attend?
Let me know,
Mike

Re: Procharged LT1 coming soon
a lot of what you see now is a thick layer of dust that has collected over the 2 years its been sitting there. It does need some new paint under the hood, but I don't have the time to pull everything out and do it right this time around. My ultimate goal is to get a hard top car and swap everything over and start from scratch as far as the body is concerned. There are too many little things wrong with this body, and I'm tired of trying to get t-tops to seal.
As far as the coil packs, next round of mods I want to. Same thing, don't have the time to do it now. I've got just over 2 weeks of break left and I've got a ton of work left to do as it is. If I don't finish the car now it'll be a long time before I can.
Highly doubtful I'll be able to make it to the summer meet. I commission in May and will immediately start work until I go to Pensacola for flight training. I probably won't be back in the area again until next Christmas.

More updates:
Got the headers in after substantial modification. Had to section part of the driver's side header to get it to clear the hump in the bellhousing for the clutch slave cylinder.
Transmission crossmember is finished. Ended up looking pretty badass, real angular. Will get some pics after the paint dries. Took a lot longer than I had planned to fab it up but it was worth it.
Will get started on the y-pipe tomorrow. Gotta make some collector flanges out of 1/2" stainless since the headers don't have flanges. Driver's side will need a slight curve added before I add the flange to clear the frame rail.
Definitely going to need to make a heat shield out of some thin-guage stainless for the fuel and brake lines running along the frame rail. The D.S. header is mighty close to the lines right now, probably within 1". If I could find some kind of high-temperature padding I'd add it to the backside of the heat shield in that area just to make doubly sure the lines aren't getting hot.
Tomorrow afternoon I'm heading to the machinist who is going to show me how to run a lathe while we make the front hubs for the LS1 brakes and the new centercaps for my wheels.
Looks like I just might actually be able to start it up this weekend

Re: Procharged LT1 coming soon
Got a ton of work done the last few days.
New hood latch support is finished so that I could mount the 4th gen washer bottle.
Y-pipe is about 75% finished. Going to weld up the parts that I have so far and finish off the actual Y when the rest of the exhaust is in.
Finally got the fuel nozzle hose that connects to the tank. Just need to get a right-angle drill to get in there and bolt it down.
Engine is back out on the stand, oil system primed, intake bolted down. Need to get a freeze plug for the waterpump as I finally removed the pipe that originally ran to the oil cooler.
New blower bracket is fabbed up and ready to go to the machinist to get cleaned up. Still rough cut right now but everything lines up great and clears the hood. Decided to go ahead and take the plasma cutter to the inner fender though and cut out the bumps that were under the original washer bottle to clear the discharge from the blower.
Transmission is 95% back together. Need to get a new snap ring tomorrow and a couple of magnets before I put the tail housing back on, then it's ready to go back in.
Going to clearance the airbox tomorrow, get the proportioning valve and fuel pressure regulator mounted, and get the fuel lines anchored down.
Will have photos tomorrow of all the new fabbed parts as well as hopefully a video of the startup

Re: Procharged LT1 coming soon
Finally got some photos, no video though, had to order an input shaft bearing for the transmission.
New hood latch support and 4th gen washer bottle. Ignore the red wire, hasn't been rerouted yet.

Patch panel on inner fender where it was "clearanced" to clear the head unit

From the wheel well. Had just wiped it down with paint thinner before spraying it with some undercoat. Ground the welds down some but wasn't real concerned with them being smooth under there. Plus I couldn't really get the grinder in there to get to them.

Hawk's Long Tube headers, showing clearancing of driver's side header for the clutch yoke bulge on the transmission. Also see the 1/2" collector flanges made last week since the headers come bare. Just need to weld an O2 bung on the passenger side header.

The beginnings of the y-pipe. They'll clear the trans mount right now. Will finish the Y once the rest of the exhaust is in. The flash makes them look worse than they do in person. Ground down the welds after putting them all together. Had to go slow and spot weld everything with the MIG since I can't TIG.

And lastly, my freshly powder coated wheels

The bearings will be in first thing in the morning so I'll get the transmission back together first. Still have some things to finish up in the engine compartment and on the engine before everything goes back in, but I'll have the engine/trans sitting in the car for good tomorrow evening.

Re: Procharged LT1 coming soon
I'm surprised I didn't post any updates when I left for school. I ended up having to leave the car in the shop again, just ran out of time to get it even trailerable. 2 more days and I could have brought it back with me.
The drivetrain is complete and in for good. Ended up having to replace another synchro in the transmission, so it was another waiting game until that came in before I could reassemble the trans and get it bolted up. I'm really wishing I would have gone ahead and put in a SPEC Stage 3+ clutch while I had everything apart instead of putting the Stage 3 back in. I may go ahead and pull the transmission back out when I get home and put one in.
The bracket I had made for the methanol tank is completely wrong, can't even really modify it easily to work. I was originally planning on keeping the 4th gen washer bottle as the washer bottle, but it's at least twice the size of the methanol tank so I'm probably going to plumb it into the methanol system instead and use the supplied tank as the washer bottle.
Got the rear wheels bolted up fine. When to put the front wheel adapters back on and quickly realized it wasn't going to work. I've got stock length lugs in the hubs, and with the LS1 front brake conversion, the additional thickness of the rotor doesn't leave enough lug sticking out to even start the nuts that hold the adapters on. Going to have to pull the brakes back apart and replace the lugs. Not real involved, just time consuming.
Got the hood bolted back on to check fitment with the blower pulley and the rebuilt hood latch. Everything lines up great and should work well.
Whats left:
- Finish the y-pipe
- Rebuild torque arm and take mount off transmission
- Get blower bolted back in, filled with oil, belt put on
- Make blower belt guard for the steering box. Going to be pretty tight clearance between the two so I want a smooth guard to keep from shredding the belt
- Finish rerouting the engine wiring harness. Lengthening the harness to put the PCM under the dash
- Make new bracket for powersteering reservoir
- Mount methanol system
- Reassemble front fascia
- Kick the tires and light the fire

Re: Procharged LT1 coming soon
How is the build coming along? I just decided to upgrade my 383 LT1 build to a D1SC procharged 383 LT1 build. My car is in the body shop now and I wanted to ask you about the modifications to the driver side inner fender. Did you have to modify it because of the way you set it up or will this have to be done no matter what if running a procharger on an LT1 in our cars? I have a 1992 z28.
I'd like for them to make the modifications now if I need it done.

Re: Procharged LT1 coming soon
I just got back in town today so I only had a few hours work on it today. Got started redoing the wiring harness tonight but had to order some new electrical connectors. Won't get much more finished on that until those come in.
As far as the fender modifications, I really can't say if it's just my setup or not. The photos of the TPI kit on the Procharger site show the discharge from the blower pointed down, I have mine pointed towards the fender, so that definitely makes a difference. However the bracket system for the TPI kit is completely different and more than likely wouldn't work at all on the LT1. I completely modified what was supplied with the universal kit and make my own bracket. The universal kit mounted the blower up too high so I dropped it down and pivoted it around the lower mounting bolt a few degrees. Haven't got the engine running yet to find out if it's for sure going to work.
If you want them to mod the fender, I basically cut out a 6" x 6" square around the bulge under the washer bottle. I bent the plate I welded in on a 45* angle across the corners to match the curve of the fender. Gave me just enough clearance under the discharge to keep the pulley out of the hood. Let me know if you need any more info on it.

Re: Procharged LT1 coming soon
Take a look at this setup by GES:
http://www.gmhightechperformance.com...all/index.html
I still need to ask Chad over there to see if they used an LT1 kit or a universal kit. I dont haev my car to look at it but I am trying to see if they way they should it setup there would work for us. I can see mounting the intercooler low in the front as shown but with the intake work coming in all the way from the side like that I am not sure. I am not running the washer bottle or anything that should be on the front driver side so maybe...
Post some more pics of your setup if you got them, I'd like to see how you got it all setup.
