Re: turbo or supercharger?

there are many things to look at when picking... two general rules between turbos and superchargers... 1-turbos make more top end power, 2-superchargers make more low end torque... this is GENERALLY... a turbo setup can make very lovely torque... turbos are really expensive due to a bunch of stuff you gotta do, like some fab work, custom headers etc etc... a roots style blower you can bolt on to a fresh engine and go, most of the time, considering compression, and everything is in immaculate condition...me personally, i would only do it on a freshly rebuilt engine... the more boost, the higher the octane gas you will need... another thing compression will have to be lower on turbos and roots blowers... turbos due to the fact that they are exhaust driven and, as we all know... the exhaust is HOT... and the roots is due to the fact that the air is routed around the outside of the case creates heat, and sometimes sucks up hot air from the cylinder, not too sure about that, but i think i read that somewhere... almost always a turbo needs to be intercooled... bloewrs dont always need them, though if you wanna run more boost with a given compression, you may need it... a roots and screw type blowers (essentially a roots blower that actually compresses the air in the case, the air comes in from the rear and spins inwards between the rotors, VERY efficient, does not creat as much heat, and makes the best power, GENERALLY, of all superchargers...) are difficult to intercool, due to the fact that it sits on top of the engine... with turbos, and centrifugal superchargers (which are practically belt driven turbos, but they dont spin as fast, or create boost as well as a turbo, consider it a mix of the two...)...

Me personally, i would LOVE a screw blower on my motor, why? it is a bolt on thing, has the lowest parasitic drag of all superchargers, and can make almost as much boost as a centrifugal can without intercooling... but they are pricey, not as pricey as turbos, but expensive indeed...

but i would say a roots blower is the most cost effective of all, its functional, proven, and cheap... you can get one for around 1800 bucks... the weiand 142 i believe... and it fits under some stock hoods...

but that is a very brief comparison between turbos and superchargers... VERY brief... but it is what i would think about first...

Turbos- absolute power, very VERY expensive
Screw- Incredible torque AND power, still very expensive...
Centrifugal- Great power, good torque, expensive...
Roots- Incredible torque (usable almost INSTANTLY), nice power, affordable...

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

and why does everyone tell people to do a search... ha ha... i hated that when i started here....

Re: turbo or supercharger?

Both turbo and supercharger will make more power than the street can handle.u could go 7s in the1/4 with a supercharger or turbo.

turbos = lag, lots of fabrication

supercharger= less fabrication, boost builds with rpm.

The best poweradder of all is .............money. the power you will make depends on the amount of money u invest.

Re: turbo or supercharger?

I opted for the Vortech S/C and am currently running 18+ lbs of boost. I did have to spend several thousand and build a new engine to get it to where I was happier. You can see pictures of this on

http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2423655

Since you have an 86 you will the same problem that I had in the beginning. You have to convert your car to a serpentine system and get rid of the v-belts if you go S/C. This is your 1st major thing to get done as you have to get all new equipment ,, (A/C, water pump, Air Pump, Alt, Crank Pulley, Idler Pulley on tensioner and P/S pump). I just purchased everthing for a 91 camaro to include all the brackets and it installed just fine.
Then I learned quickly that if you are going S/C you might want to repin your ECM and get rid the MAF sensor and go MAP Sensor.. The MAF can handle light engine mods just fine. It doesn't like forced induction very much. You have to pin your ecm so your car can run a 1227730 ecm with a AUJP chip. Uh OH.. more problems. New knock sensor, Getting rid the EST module because it is controlled by the ecm. You will have to learn some basic ecm programming to shut off the VATS on the new prom also. It takes alot of time and patience.. I have been working on mine for almost 2 years but it was worth the wait.
