Hey all, I know im new to this forum but i been looking through the site for quite a while now. Im a total newb to anything powered by gas (Im a computer Techie) so the stuff im going to ask or want info on please remember that i have never done it, thought about how, or seen done before lol. I just did my first oil change a month ago lol. No not spoiled, just never had to do any mechanics before.
I recently bought a 1986 Firebird and wanted to give it just a little bit more power. Im having some issues figuring some of this stuff out though. The previous owner has done some "Work" to the car. Unfortunatly the guy is no longer around for me to verify what all he had done or did himself to the car so this is just what i have figured out myself from a lot of research on the net.
Its an 86 firebird, but he installed a bodykit from a 19?? Trans Am to make it look nice. He also rebuilt the tranny into something i have no clue how to find out, but im almost positive that he added a shift kit into it, it shifts HARD, really HARD, even at lower speeds. All i have is a recept of the purchase and installation of the new tranny for $4000. Unfortunatly it does not say what type.
The headers are stock but the guy did add a better exhast after them, put a 3" system behind it. He did on the other hand throw in some headman headers he bought for it but never got installed. Ill be adding those in time.
He also changed the motor to the 350 TPI 5.7. That i have no idea what it came out of. But its pretty clear what it is since it says it in pretty engraving on the top of the motor. I have no idea what year the motor is.
Im only about 75% poor (Have Kids) so i can invest a little bit into making this car better. I dont want a drag car, just a nice street car thats got a little bit more than what it has now. Say maybe 50-75 more HP. Im just wanting to know what i can do that dont require me pulling out the motor or something crazy like that.
Just dont forget im a baby when it comes to this stuff but im a quick read and can learn. I just want some good advise on how to get that little extra out of it without blowing a grand just to get it. I dont mind dropping $500 to have some fun with but id like to keep it around that for now. With kids its hard to get more than $500 at a time to do anything so if i do 500 here and there it wont hurt as bad lol. Baby steps everyone, baby steps lol.
Yes my best wish was to just yank the motor and turn it into a 383 stroker, but i think thats a bit to far out of my reach right now both finacially and ability.
Oh and i know this seems to be a hot debate here to some so ill just say it now. Im not bottle feeding this baby !
