Which year/model to buy ?
Howdy folks,
ok I'm 100% new to this forum, so I'l ltry to keep this short.
Wifey had a surgery, complications, ended up with a hemorrhagic stroke, recovering yes, will she able to drive one of these days ? Hopefully yes .. drive with a manual transmission uhmmm doubt it
What I want to get it is this ...
A reliable car... with decent mileage (because she and I will be driving it) . .a car I can work on ... and a car that has some damn umph (!!) to it (yes wifey loves cars with some damn umph to it as well lmao)
ie.. not some lil'Honda .. not some Toyota (because eve nthough they last once they do break down.. parts are pricy)
I was thinking of a third or maybe .. fourth generation Camaro... what I need to know is this ... what would be best to get
a 305 V8 with automatic ... or.. 350 with automatic
What's the difference in gas mileage ... street.. and highway
Which engine is easier/cheaper to get parts for ?
I know the 305's only had hmmm 200 horsepower ?? But that would be good enough to.. heh... start out with
Advice people.. please .... need to know here
Driving wife's '89 SAAB 900 right now ... and that car is too heavy for that lil'engine it got .. and brakes aint top notch.. plus... cornering... look ya know how some cars have body roll ? Well this one aint just got that ... she drags... drags... in the corners
Neighbor of mine had a '91 Camaro Z28 ... with a 305 (did they come with 305's or with 350's ?????) and yeah I liked it .. rode nice ... handled nice... very good selection of parts etc
Sorry for the long post guys, but this is a real important thing to me.. .thanks
PS/ Yes I can work on cars, not planning on getting a car which I have to get to a dealership or a shop .. so a smallblock with distributor ... absolut must .. no offense V6 owners but.. no thanks ... had a 3.8V6 once... headache to repair /DS

To say you've opened a can of worms is an understatement.
Right off the bat, both are decent on mileage, neither are great. Both have parts available. Both have decent power, but of course that's a relative term. 350s are harder to find, but they're by no means rare.
I say go with the 350 if you plan on digging into it in the future.

Rebuilding
OK, let's face it .. I may not be able to find a real low low mileage car .. .so if I want to rebuild it.. these would be my questions:
1) 305 - How is the selection of pistons .. not huge oversize.. but just tiny oversized IF the cylinders are badly worn and you NEED to bore them out
2) Connecting rods .. standard Chevy ones correct ? 5.7 small journal ?
3) Intake manifolds .. matching with heads ... what is the selection when it comes to the 305 ?
Does the 305 give any better overall gas mileage than the 350 ?
Yes I could go for a newer Camaro but also thinking.. higher price for a still highly used car.. plus higher insurance due to a slightly newer car
BTW.. lol.. thanks for the I M M E D I A T E reply *lol* now that was fast
