super or turbo on a v6?

hey guys i got 1991 v6 camaro and i'm trying to add more power to it without the hassle of engine swaps, and i wanna know if u can supercharge or turbo charge a 3.1 liter, as a matter of fact i don't even know what the difference is between a super and a turbocharger!! i've also heard about a procharger, what is it and how does it work? and which of these (if possible) gives me more power??

Re: super or turbo on a v6?

do your research on superchargers and turbo chargers first before you do anything. (google is amasing) and contrary to popular beliefe you cant just slap on a turbo or supercharger and expect in to work so do your research on building the engine for it. and a procharger is a cintrifigal supercharger. procharger is the brand name.

Re: super or turbo on a v6?

motor and transmission swap may end up being cheaper and more reliable than adding a power adder.
Turbo requires a bit more work to install but ends up giving you great power and good gas mileage.

Supercharger is usually easier to install and gives you great power, but you lose gas mileage due to the power required to spin the supercharger which spins when the engine is running.

Both setups benefit from a low compression forged internal motor so with a stock 3.1 you are limited with how much boost (psi) you can run without damaging the motor.

Re: super or turbo on a v6?

Do some research and price out all your options and the amount of horsepower you will be getting out of each one. Lastly, calculate the dollar per horsepower gain so you will be getting the most out of your money.

Honestly, after doing all of that, I think you will be better off with a motor and transmission swap. You will be able to make more horsepower out of it and have more options available for it than you do for you stock v6. Plus, a turbo or supercharged 3.1V6 will prolly only be putting out 200 maybe to 240 horsepower when your all done. A 305 or 350 stock tpi motor will easily give you 220-240 horsepower and over 300 lbs of torque.

Be sure to do your homework. But that's my 2 cents.

tested at 21 psi and its still in one piece (stock bottom end cast pistons)

and it makes a **** ton of power

actual dyno pull puts it at 338Hp and 463Ftlbs @ 9 pounds of boost but that was with severe ignition system problems so now were looking at around 400hp and 500+ ftlbs @ only 9 psi

so it is very possible u just need to do ur research first

just follow this( i wrote up that writeup under my old name some of the info is wrong but it will give u a ood idea on how to turbo ur car on the cheap) https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/v6/3...ing-turbo.html that will be good to get u 300 hp at the motor

being as u have a 91 v6 car it runs a speed density system

so instead of bein able to rely on the maf for fueling u would have to go with an ecm swap or a megasquirt standalone system
the megasquirt system will run u about 300 bucks for an assembled ecu and wiring harness and take u about 6 hours to install
