TurboTPI upgrade....Finally

Well, after almost 10years i am doing some upgrading. New turbo and wastegate. After so many years and not going much faster over the years (turbo is maxed out), ive finally gotten bored. I figure my 62mm turbonetics has done good so far, but i want alittle more. I was looking at the turbonetics hurricane series 78mm turbo, but a friend of mine didnt use a turbo he bought a (Turbonetics HP-76) and desided to sell it, so i said if it fits, ill take it. Its tight, but it fits. With a horsepower rating of 1,000hp, i have plenty of room to grow. I also went away with the 38mm wastgate i had previously and went with a 44mm tial unit. Should be back on the street for some fresh tuning in a couple weeks. Im hoping for some low 10 sec times, MAYBE a 9.99 with the new setup. We will see. The stock block and crank will determine that. Heres a pic of the turbo on the car.

Re: TurboTPI upgrade....Finally

Thanks guys, should be getting the wastegate and piping for it figured out next week. I had the wastegate venting to atmosphere, but this time im going to route it back into the exhaust, so i have a little bit of work to do. Im kind of sick of the loud open wastegate sound.

Re: TurboTPI upgrade....Finally

Are you running a log on the passenger side or a header? I saw pics of a header on the driver side.

I can't seem to get my car past the 94 mph barrier in the 1/8th at any boost and our cars are similar in many ways. Trying to figure out my bottle neck.

I'm running aluminum L98 heads with 2.02/1.94 valves and minor port work with a TPIS ZZ-9 cam.

The passenger side is half header, half log. The two out side exhaust ports exit the head in a single pipe then joint a main "log" that the two center exhaust ports just exit straight into.

AWESOME BUILD. I love seeing TPI cars make good numbers. Do you happen to have a dyno sheet or breakdown of your best pass.

Just want to see how I compare so far..........

Thanks, I will try and find my fastest timeslip. What is your car putting down? or running in the 1/4?

Around 650rwhp through a 6 speed.

Here are a couple passes. As you can tell, I can't hook or shift too fast, yet....

7.2@102 with a 1.87 60"

Better burnouts coming!

I found a timeslip where i went 6.9@102mph in the 1/8 with a 1.61 60ft. That run i went 10.81@126mph. I cant find my faster timeslips but i want to say 6.8@103 1/8 mile and i know ive cut a 1.55 60ft and that was one of my 10.7passes @ 129mph in the 1/4 mile. And i know i had one pass in the car that it went 130mph in the 1/4 mile. So we are very, very close power wise i'd say

Awesome! Looking forward to seeing how the new turbo works out for you. I've got a TC78 on my setup. Still dialing in a few things on it, but it's been a blast so far!

Re: TurboTPI upgrade....Finally

obeymybird, yes, i have a BBS header.

Well, ive been driving the car daily to work and back. I have the boost set at 14 lbs and it feels alot stronger than before. The boost comes in so much harder than the 62mm. Its almost like hitting N2O. I was going to start working on the tune, but i think im just gonna wait and get the EBL p4 when i have the extra cash. Once i get a wideband in the car and verify the A/F ratio is safe, ill get some new times at the dragstrip.

Those really are amazing #'s with those heads. There 113's right? Whats youre intake setup exactly? Runners, Base, etc.. And what is youre compression?

Should be back on the street for some fresh tuning in a couple weeks. Im hoping for some low 10 sec times, MAYBE a 9.99 with the new setup. We will see. The stock block and crank will determine that. Heres a pic of the turbo on the car.
Hey! I was driving right behind you yesterday on RT 83. I was in a white '83 Z/28.

Thanks, I'm not sure exact numbers off the heads, but they are off a 1990 L98 vette. I have TPIS large tube runners, ported stock base, ported plenum and 58mm throttle body. Compression is 8.35:1

1990 Vette heads would be 113's. But with the 58cc's on those. How did you get that CR ratio?

I love youre car BTW. Have the GMHT with it.

Yep, they are the 58cc heads. I have dished pistons and the thickest SCE copper head gaskets available. I was trying to get the lowest comp possible with the 58cc heads. i was trying for 8:1

any engine makes power if you cram enough air and fuel down its throat

OP, your times will improve cosiderably if you can get that turbo spooled up at the stage light. some sort of make shift bang box would do it... and scare the bajesus out of people at red lights

Yeah, im sure i could have gotton mid-lows 10's if i has a trans brake, but then i'd have rear axle problems for sure. Im not sure how the stock rear end is still alive now, let alone with any boosted launches. haha

TurboedTPI,

I'm on a mission to get my 60 foots to 1.5. Since your combo is similar to mine, just wondering what all you've done to get to those. I went 1.59 on my old sport coupe on stock suspension and have gone 1.79 on radials in the Iroc, but since putting the new engine in I can't seem to control wheel spin on the rollout.. My best 60 foot now has gone to 2.0. Anyway I want to get it right but I don't want to buy parts I don't need. Debating on dual adjustable shocks and struts and an adjustable torque arm.

What tires exactly are you running? My best 60ft's were with 255/50r16 M/T drag radials on my stock wheels. I have all stock suspension execpt for TPIS valved shocks. Its transfers weight really well for being nearly stock. One day ill get a 9in rear axle and get some boosted launches made.

you could also bring in boost like your doing a 5-10 foot roll out to help keep the axles straight.

My tires are stock size 16" Firestone Wide Oval Indy 500's. The original Wide Ovals hooked better. I just found a set of the M/T ET Streets 255/60r16 that I would use on the stockers. But my friend had me convinced to buy some 15 inch wheels instead until I saw your 1.5 60 foot on the same 16" tires I was looking at.

I've been leaning towards double adjustable struts/shocks front and rear. I really like the QA1 coil over conversion struts. The only other major parts I was thinking about are Spohn crossmember with driveshaft loop and SFC's.

Re: TurboTPI upgrade....Finally

So tonite i finally finished the wastegate plumbing, it is now routed back into the exhaust. I only drove it a few miles with a couple pulls, but so far its great. Nice and quiet, and able to hear more turbo whistle. And i still have the electric cutout if i want to disturb the peace.

Re: TurboTPI upgrade....Finally

Heres a video of the car from the outside, first pass closed exhaust cutout, second is with the exhaust cutout open. The second one, the sound cuts out as i pass the camera, buts its just the recording, not the car cutting out.

Re: TurboTPI upgrade....Finally

Heres an in car video. The sound of the exhaust has me thinking i need a bigger exhaust system. It sounds like air rushing out, no engine sound at all, just high velocity air blowing out the exhaust.

don't feel bad...I have a 3" straight thru exhaust and all you can hear is the turbo spooling and a huge rush of air out the exhaust too

Re: TurboTPI upgrade....Finally

Mine has 4 mufflers on it and sounds like air too. With the old setup with turbos out the hood and no filters i could just hear turbo screaming lol underhood not so much
