Notchback Tech... Well guys here we go I got the notchback home from PA and am going to be painting etc... within the next few weeks....Also replacing the age old glass in which i just shattered all over the floor just minutes ago... :) I'll be taking pictures and what not to show what needs to be done....I'll keep u all posted... |
I wanna know how much in weight savings that's worth. I think you should send it to me instead :p |
well i really don't know but i don know that it was pretty heavy for me and my dad to move around so i don't think much for weight savings....Here's a few pics of the progress so far...seeing how i won't be able to do much today because I wasn't able to get paint or primer today cuz it's a sunday here's so far with the sanding....1st started to get the old window off (Glass) It was affixed bu some type of crappy caulking which was a real pain well you'll be able to see what happened to the window 2nd i proceeded by sanding by using 80 grit regular sandpaper then just keep doing that lol...... |
1 Attachment(s) This is how it looked when i bought it but on the donor car. |
1 Attachment(s) well u can only guess what had to be done to the glass window.. |
1 Attachment(s) here's the bottom of it after a pretty good amount of sanding |
1 Attachment(s) Here's a picture i'm think i'm pretty much done sanding without primer at all....so I'll be priming it tommorrow then getting it ready to paint it the color that u see in the upper left of the screen Plymouth Prowler red....both bottom and top will be painted with this color....2 coats paint.... 2 clear coat.. |
Originally posted by GokuZ06Roc well u can only guess what had to be done to the glass window.. YOu had to break it??? Wouldn't come out. |
yea it was held in by some type of super super strong epoxy....plus i wanted to paint it without the window in so i figured what the hell just break it and find somethin else like plexi or have a glass company cut some glass around here... |
can you add a spoiler on a notchback? like a high rise? |
i want more pics. |
Spoilers that can go on the original Notchback (from the factory) are limited because there is a small divit in the middle of the notchback that prohibits using the iroc style 85-90, 91-92 Z28 high rise and early 82-85 style spoilers....The Baldin Motion Notchbacks can use any spoiler u want....of coarse u have to dill holes for the threaded studs but that's basically it. I'm getting more pictures as we speak.....I for one am using the 85-90 Iroc style spoiler on a baldwin motion notchback.....there are about 4 different design notchbacks...the Original which was included on the 88- correct me if i'm wrong 89 GTA Trans Ams, the Baldwin motion notchback was being made in the mid to late 1980's by a company in NYC today that notchback retails for about $1300, quite expensive but i've seen few for sale of either one and if used expect to pay around 400-700 dollars....The other notchbacks I'm sure you've all heard is from Hawksthirdgen site which i'm not too sure on what spoilers fit. and there's also the Tojan Notchback and the ferrari type notchbacks....I'll start posting pics... as soon as i'm done prepping and painting my notchback. |
what kind of primer are you using? |
I'm using a base coat clear coat, the primer i'm using is martin senouir 2K Primer which is actually really good so far, goes on real thick, i'll get some pics in a sec... |
1 Attachment(s) here's some body goop filler here and there where it needed on the bottom |
1 Attachment(s) another...i used easter colors too :p |
1 Attachment(s) primed photos.... |
another...sorry quality of picture isn't that great |
1 Attachment(s) here's a big shot....tommorrow i'm going to sand this down using 220 grit, then.....start with the plymouth prowler paint and clearcoat, this is 2 coats of primer |

Good work so far. I think the 91-92 z28 spoiler would look pretty cool on the notchback personally. |
Make a pattern for the glass out of cardboard or wood and take it to the glass shop. Any GOOD glass shop will be able to cut the glass from your pattern and then send it out to be tempered. Just make sure your pattern is a good fit before taking it to the glass shop 'cause once it's cut and tempered it can't be recut. Also make sure to get your pattern back when you pick up the glass so if there is a fit problem you'll know if it is a problem with the glass or your pattern. |
thanks for imput on glass (stated above) GTA4ME, is this how you got your glass or did you get it an other way (from what i read it sounds like it was replaced) |
1 Attachment(s) here's some final pics cept i'm gotten tired from doing this all day. sorry for the quality of pictures....the only program i have for paint is microsoft paint and it sux. |

how much would you say that thing weighs? i'm assuming it would be much lighter than the factory hatch. |
They dont make notchbacks for firebirds do they???? I really like the look of it. Nice job putting it on your car |
well....I';m not trying to jinx anyone out there but it might be at the most 15 lbs lighter.....they both seem about the same weight...so i dunno.....but the hatches from both firebirds and camaros are interchangeable including notchbacks (there both the same) |
and the only factory notchback was on a firebird :D looks very nice, one of the nicer looking notchbacks i've seen, original spoiler is a nice touch...really dislike that hi-rise one that i've seen done soooooo many times. |
correct....and thank u....one thing i did notice is that u also have to apply a long bead of weatherstrip on the under side of the notchback...wear the weatherstrip meet it's not seeming up on the factory weatherstrip for some reason... |
Not my cup of tea, but you did a great job. Thumbs up to you... |
I got some new pics finally there a little bigger in the 400K range so I included a Few links of the baldwin notchback on the car....please feel free to view. http://www.geocities.com/gokuirocz/Car2.JPG http://www.geocities.com/gokuirocz/Car4.JPG http://www.geocities.com/gokuirocz/car3.JPG |
