Cup holder

Anybody make a cup holder in their center consol? right behind where the power window and hatch release buttons are?

dr1 09-17-2005 09:34 PM

im suprised i never see that, considering the center console is pretty useless itself, you could turn the cover into the cupholder real easy

Firebreed 09-17-2005 09:40 PM

Well this is what i was thinking (yes im real bored lol)

use a car that already has cupholders and mesure the diamater of the cupholder, Then get a PVC pipe of that diamater (find a section of pipe where the inside diamater is the same as your mesurements) Then use the Pipe as your Guide to make the cupholder "hole", if their is not enough room with the switches, relocate them to where the front astray is and mount them there, Then with a sawzall or simmilar, cut out the opening for the cupholder (practice on a junkyard peice first, just incase) After that, put the pice of pvc pipe under the consol and find a way to "mount" it, Ie: Superglue, Epoxy, ect, After that fiberglassthe PVC area and shape how you want it.

Sound doable?

dr1 09-17-2005 09:56 PM

anythings doable, id like to see someone do cupholders in the console itself though.. like.. not sure I think 4thgen console is like that

im considering putting a cupholder on the hump right behind the console
would be a bitch to reach, but now that the 5spd is going in I wont have 1 hand free to hold the cup anymore, heh..

Firebreed 09-17-2005 10:14 PM

Heres what i was thinking of doing, plz exuse the crapy MS-paint drawing, but youll get the idea

Sonix 09-18-2005 11:56 AM

I was thinking of doing that, but I like to rest my arm there, and I have a stick shift, so if it's a tall cup, I might be bumping it...

I thought there was an article on the main page of TGO for making these in the ash tray area (I can't do that either as my flip forward deck is rather long)....

I think you'd want a bit of a draft angle, rather then just PVC pipe, but just a guess...

I'd try to nab a center console (or whatever) with a cup holder, then just cut out the cup holder itself and mount that in to your center console. dropped down such that a normal pop can, can still be picked up, but yet low enough that a tall big gulp won't be super top heavy....

my other thought on the matter was to simply buy a big gulp (or something similar), and mold the cup in.... fiberglass, or just epoxy. then you have the size for any cup smaller then that, and it's got a perfect angle...

NEEDforSPEED 09-18-2005 07:12 PM

iv seen one done to the ash tray

It's really not as complex as you guys are making it out to be.
A speaker port cut to desired depth, a cap on the end. Cut hole in console, insert port, be done with it.

Consider the air bag module under the console in so eqipped cars before cutting.

2.5"... 3-3.5 would fit something more than a soda can.

A hole saw, I own a variety of sizes for work.
Pilot hole and a saber saw with a scroll blade for wood will work also. Roto tools (ie dremel), I don't know.

Yes, the whole car very dirty, not just the inside.

NEEDforSPEED 09-22-2005 02:11 AM

id hate to have a nice size bottle of water in there with that5spd

rocluvr0013 09-22-2005 03:12 AM

I actually helped a buddy of mine do this exact thing in high school turned out looking factory and worked fine for smaller cups and beer... er i mean soda cans

Yeah cause it's way to easy to spill. And that's a party foul.

lxcamaroxl 09-26-2005 07:53 AM

I have made one. Pretty Easy, ill try getting some pics.

theredline 10-12-2005 03:39 PM

Here's a REAL EASY way I did it. I went on ebay and bought cup holder's for pool tables. Perfectly flat. Costs about 3-4 dollars. They are about 3 or 4 inches deep. Then dremel the hole and slide it in. Sorry don't have a picture.

Crayz9000 10-13-2005 12:18 PM

You'll get more Ebay hits if you search for "poker table cup holder". There's a lot of them out there, just make sure they're the extra deep variety.

Sonix 10-13-2005 01:22 PM

that's surprisingly helpful... huh, don't play poker/pool enough to notice that I guess. I'm going for that.

in texas it is perfectly legal to be drinking an alcholic beverage while driving. as long as you are not over the legal limit of course

rocluvr0013 10-14-2005 12:22 PM

Not sure if they stil do, but back when I lived in Wichita Falls, TX they had drive thru liquor stores.

Something like McDonalds. Drive up, order a drink, pay, & drive off with you alcoholic drink in hand.

They have them in Kentucky, too.

nice cup holder:thumbsup:

Firebreed 10-18-2005 02:45 PM

Thats not quiet what i had pictured  i was looking for a more flush mount, perhaps if i just cut down that leftover and put some sort of molding around it it would look a lot cleaner

82knightrider 10-18-2005 02:49 PM

just get some factory door panel cup holders.Thats the best way to go.

good luck finding some for a decent price tho:(

unless you get lucky and score some at a junkyard:thumbsup:

I got a driver and pasenger side for 2.00$ each at a j/y once:burnout:

lxcamaroxl 10-18-2005 03:02 PM

it would be a lot cleaner if you just cut it down, but i found it is better like this becuase i can take it out if I want (Cleaning, etc)

Its really not that big tho.

Firebreed 10-18-2005 03:06 PM

found some berly centercaps from a Jyard, a buck 50 a peice, :D

camaro_doc 10-31-2005 10:38 PM

In Delaware the passenger is alound to have a open container the driver is not. That makes the ride nice sometimes. :)

ringo234 11-27-2005 07:58 PM

I bought a couple of cheap cup holders at Pep Boys (the kind that were meant to hang from the window).
Cut them down and modified them with some Velcro and then pop riveted them on the sides of the center console.

51F1 12-01-2005 11:05 AM

I think I would rather bump a bottle of water in a cup holder than have that hot cup of coffee between my legs spill onto my carpet in front of me. I have a 5-speed also, and driving with any beverage is a PIA.

irocbarry 12-02-2005 01:09 AM

up till october 15 of this year it was legal in montana to drink and drive if under limit, and even now its only like a 100 fine. and the cops have all said they arent gonna pull you over for it, but if you do get pulled over they will ticket it for you

no that is not true; atleast were i am around dfw,
no open containers, now passangers can't even drink

xlwhellraiser 12-03-2005 12:16 AM

The whole trick is not to get caught. And if you are able to handle yourself, they can't even tell that you are drunk.
I drove many times like that, although I know my limits, and I am a much more cautious driver than I am sober.
I don't care what you think about that statement, all I know is that its true.
Drink up, and be responsible.

Xophertony 12-03-2005 12:35 AM

EDIT
this post was turning this thread into a debate on drinking while driving, as nothing i say, no matter how profound, is going to change anyones mind i removed it.

i like the cupholder in the tech artical, to bad that wont work for firebird guys....:(

lxcamaroxl 12-03-2005 07:07 PM

yea, seriously. not cool

wow...your an f'ing idiot...i hope you fall in a drunken stupor and kill yourself so you won't reproduce any more stupid people like you.

yeah buddy, drink up, and when you run into someone with your impaired judgement and kill their baby girl, you can explain to them your theory on knowing your limits. it doesn't work that way. alchohol is a depressent, and it slows down how quickly your brain reacts. just cause you *think* you have control...doesn't mean that's how it actually is.

83 Crossfire TA 12-05-2005 03:53 PM

I’ve been resisting adding non technical content to this thread, but I have to point out: if you can’t wait till you get to wherever you’re going to have a drink then you probably have a problem, no mater how in control you think you are.

xlwhellraiser 12-07-2005 02:38 AM

I was gonna say something, but I decided to be the better man here.
I assure you no one will be hurt by me! Especially little girls at 3am in the morning!

Back to Topic.

Switching to fourth gen console is an answer for anyone who needs a cupholder.;)

hmmurdock_00 12-07-2005 01:55 PM

I have a retracting cupholder unit that looks factory, no pics of it, nor have i installed yet. Haven't found a suitable location, its is just over 1/2 inch tal maybe a 3/4 would fit perfect under the center vents in a camaro, but you take a risk of what ever drink it is spilling on the radio. One salution i had was to move the radio under the vents, the add the cup holder to where the radio was, need a plate or something else in the hole to fill it in but it came as a kit so it also has a pocket piece to go with it.

lxcamaroxl 12-07-2005 03:18 PM

thats pretty neat i would like to see that

mw66nova 12-07-2005 03:43 PM

just glad i live in GA and not CO.

xlwhellraiser 12-07-2005 05:52 PM

Anyone ever thought of using our "kitchen table" dash for a cup holder. Should be pretty easy!

lxcamaroxl 12-08-2005 07:16 AM

doing homework was also easy on our dash.

MorbidHobo 12-08-2005 04:44 PM

You know people like you are the reason why every 22 minutes someone dies in an alcohol-related motor vehicle accident. Im 17 and i see that i already have more common sense than you. In the 3 1/2 years i have been in High School, i have been through the loss of 3 people i knew since childhood. All three were killed by a drunk driver.

Yeah youre real funny and cool; you make me sick.

lxcamaroxl 12-08-2005 07:45 PM

nah man this guy is special, he knows his limits. :bs:
