did I come across a rare iroc? I was just given a 1987 iroc Z.It was in a fire, drivers side seat was melted, headliner, some plastic and both side windows were smashed out.I worked on a buddies car at work and he gave me the iroc for payment. He got it for his son and he didn't do anything with it. So anyway the reason I think it might be work saving besides it being an Iroc is its a TPI 305,5 speed stick with AC..black with gray interior.I tried doing a search for value on NADA but they don't list a 5 speed as an option on the car.It does have the sticker in the center console thats how I verified its a Iroc..any thoughts.... |
Re: did I come across a rare iroc? If you decoded the sticker and all the codes you would also know if it was an original 5 speed, i would start there. I can't remember the first year TPI and 5 speeds were merged together. |
Re: did I come across a rare iroc? also has rear disc brakes it that matters. |
Re: did I come across a rare iroc? You could get a 5 speed in 1987 with the LB9. First year. |
Re: did I come across a rare iroc? ok so on the sticker in the console I saw MM5 so yes it was a 5 speed Iroc..I'm assuming it should say LB9 also if it is a true 305 tuned port car then..I'll look tomorrow. The engine as been modified has a TPIS intake, edlbrock TI-tech headers,..I want to make sure its the correct motor..is a 5 speed AC iroc common? It does have some rust issues but I do bodywork so nothing a cutoff wheel and a welder can't fix. |
Re: did I come across a rare iroc? Rare? Not really, but unusual in the sense that 700R4 cars outnumber them. |
Re: did I come across a rare iroc? Rare to me is something you don't see everyday. Honestly I've had my car for about a week and threw seats in it,window glass, heater core..and now I'm driving it around. I haven't seen another 3rd generation camaro at all.Now I do remember most I've seen where auto's.So to me thats rare.Afterall having a car that not everyone has is what makes a car disirable as long as its something you would want.A rare 4 banger camaro wouldn't do BUT a 5 speed,AC,TPI 305 iroc Z might. All I'm asking is have you ever seen one because I haven't.The only other 5 speed camaro I ever saw was a 91 RS..and that was a dog...yellow though, which looks amazing. |
Re: did I come across a rare iroc? It's hard to tell from the white book how many 5-speed IROCs were produced but the number of non automatic Camaros in general including v6 cars is low. Air conditioning on the other hand is very common. I don't recall ever seeing a non AC IROC. |
Re: did I come across a rare iroc? oh ok Thanks Hank..I'm new to 3rd generation camaros so I'm learning what makes them different. I always had old school muscle..1968 RS camaro,1969 chevelle,1970 lemans sport,1978 monza 400 small block(crazy) etc and any of those with AC would help the value. Now seeing as I got 5 speed iroc normally anything stick helps the value and being its the first year TPI 305 in iroc...you know where I'm going with this... |
Re: did I come across a rare iroc? Also has the bose sound system..or someone stole the rear well cover with one with speakers that say AC delco/Bose on them..damb radio is gone..I'm thinking if everything is numbers on this car I'm going completly stock..why hack it up.. |

Re: did I come across a rare iroc? I haven't seen one yet..the ones I have seen in see in the past are one of two things..first hacked up,fadded paint, cut up interior with exhaust on it..OR a restored and tastefully modified car.In my opinion don't do anything that requires cutting to modify unless suspenion,or you can't put back to original by bolting back in.Once you cut something up and throw the part away..its gone forever.I'm not sure if these cars will go price wise where 1st gens are BUT 10 years ago I could have gotten an Iroc for 1500 bucks now one in the same shape goes for 2500-3000.so they are gettin there..afterall I got mine for free..that doesn't happen much anymore..hell I drove it home..cold though with no windows and heat...anyway that was alittle off base but thats what I've seen around. |
Re: did I come across a rare iroc? I think there are a lot more NICE thirdgens hiding in garages that you don't see because people seldom drive them to keep them nice. I've got three, so I understand how that happens. Remember the promotion at Papa Johns? Drive your Camaro to Papa Johns, get a free pizza. I saw more nice thirdgen Camaros that one day then in the 4 years we've lived in this town. They're out there, you just don't see them unless you look for them. I've seen plenty of 5spds in the last 15 years. Most of them are V6 cars and low output V8s, with a few HO 305's and TPI 305's. The big thing that kills the 5spd is the weakness of the T5, and the lack of any 350 5spd cars. Most people would rather have more displacement then the 5spd. |
Re: did I come across a rare iroc? I would say you have a common car in rare condition :lol::lol: |

Overall for '87, out of the 137,760 Camaro's made, 22,651 had the 5spd. Roughly 16%. Personally, I'd take a 5.0TPI 5spd over the 5.7L auto any day. I enjoy driving, and being part of the shifting is part of the passion. Of coarse the best would have been the most cubic inches and a standard tranny. Take what you can get I guess, or modify. |
Re: did I come across a rare iroc? I agree love manual cars...car also has the G92 option.Just checked it out. I will take a picture of the RPO sticker and post it if I can get a clear picture.I don't know why some people get an attitude when you say something is rare or different.Ok how about this, its unique..will that make people happy?I just wanted to share some excitement about what I have since like I said I'm new to 3rd generation camaros, got the car for free and its not the most common car around. So if I offended anyone sorry..I thought most of you would like to know about a cool find and that I'm not gonna cut it up and ruin whats rare about it.. |

It is a cool find, however you generally won't get a good response asking if your car is rare, because 99.999% of the time it isn't rare. If it was rare the previous owner would of know it and sold it as such. |
Re: did I come across a rare iroc? ok I agree with that..I still like the fact that I had 2 people look at it today and said "wow its a stick don't see many of those".I do think however if I were to sell it,which I don't want to I'm having to much fun, A 5 speed would be a plus..I'm learning..lol |
Re: did I come across a rare iroc? It's a plus to some... however look at the production numbers and you'll see that the 5 speed wasn't a plus to about 70% of people. You definitely have a well optioned "drivers car" with the G92, TPI and 5 speed :) |
Re: did I come across a rare iroc? I love the torque curve on the TPI 305 5-speed. I had a 1970 lemans sport with a 400 4-speed in it.You could hang in gears alot longer..the camaro your out of first very quickly and when you pop into 5th at about 60 the engine rpms drop to about 1500..and it just cruises.Sounds amazing.Handles great..its nice being able to downshift and go... |
Re: did I come across a rare iroc? Sounds like a nice car, throw up some pictures! ;) |
Re: did I come across a rare iroc? 3 Attachment(s) |
Re: did I come across a rare iroc? 1 Attachment(s) one interior picture..headliner is still burnt up. the seats are base model since the deluxe seats got burnt up.I got the whole set for 50 bucks so couldn't beat it.Has no radio but will soon..Attachment 194529 |

Do I have a rare IROC??? :D I have heard of the AC delete before and the drive train combinations but factory rear disk brakes on a 305 car? THAT i have never heard of. I would say rare in this sense. What are the numbers on this one people? :totopic: |

RPO J65 on a 305 is fairly common. For example, 82-86 (pre-dating the 350), there were about 80,000 J65 cars. JamesC What are the numbers on the ac delete? Also where is this "white book" everyone is talking about or do you have to buy it? |

Mike Antonick's Genuine Camaro White Book 1967-1997 (I understand there's a revised edition). ISBN: 0-933534-40-X. I purchase mine several years ago at Borders, IIRC. JamesC |
Re: did I come across a rare iroc? Thanks JamesC! First gen's too! Ill have to go get that one! :totopic: |
Re: did I come across a rare iroc? its the NADA classic car guide..well thats what i go on...its online. |
Re: did I come across a rare iroc? I assume the NADA is pricing? The White Book provides production numbers, facts by year, factory options (RPO's) with qty. and retail cost, color and interior codes and so on--again by year. If you're a Camaro guy, the book is indispensable. JamesC |
Re: did I come across a rare iroc? All 87 players cars were 5 speed, tpi, non ac g92 4 wheel disc cars as well. |
Re: did I come across a rare iroc? Thanks James..I will pick it up. |
Re: did I come across a rare iroc? I just ordered what looks to be a new latest 4th edition of the book. 160 pps as opposed to128 pps of the first edition. Shop around as it is pretty pricey to say the least... $142 @ amazon for new. |

What it does have, is the "C41" manual climate controls, and all the stuff that comes with G92!! The one exception is, my car was "molested" at a young age (first year of it's life, being 1987), someone "stole" the original proper rear end out of the car!! It came with the G80 GM3 (3:45 ratio) posi Borg Warner 7.75 rear with J65 four wheel disks, and it was replaced with a G80 GW6 (3:27 ratio) posi Borg Warner 7.75 rear with J65 four wheel disks!!! Is it a Players Car??? Not as far as I know!!! |

Re: did I come across a rare iroc? $85-$95 on fleaBay. |
Re: did I come across a rare iroc? Just checked my latest copy of the white book, (1967-1993) inside the front cover is an order form listing the price as $11.95 plus $3 shipping/ handling. I bought it at a swap meet somewhere. Is this new edition hard cover with color pics. Even if it is the price seems over the top. The one I have is nice because it fits into the console so you can keep it on hand for easy reference. I agree with JamesC if you are interested in Camaros the book is a must. It doesn't list all RPOs but the common ones are all there. |
Re: did I come across a rare iroc? The following White Book is out of stock apparently, but note the $15.95 price: http://www.chevy-camaro.com/shop/Camaro-White-Book.asp If you have a bookstore nearby, such as Borders, you might drop in and take a peek. No telling what you might find. JamesC |
Re: did I come across a rare iroc? I saw that astronomical price on the White Book a while back. $10-15 is fair. The newest version seems to include more on that 4th gens. I doubt the 82-92 section has changed at all. I've got the 67-97 version in my library, it's more then sufficient for what is basically a field guide to thirdgens. The Firebird Red Book is nice, but it's no where near as handy as the White Book. |
