Re: 1990 Formula LB9/MM5/3.42 SLP Air box and borla tips/exhaust. Super nice deal |
Re: 1990 Formula LB9/MM5/3.42 Thanks John, less than 20 miles from me - I'm on it! :D |
Re: 1990 Formula LB9/MM5/3.42 If I lived closer (and I had a place to put it right now) I would pick it up, refurbish and then sell... It appears that the front fascia has been repainted, but the hood is original paint. Has the original spoiler, which is prone to cracks in the pictures... BUt for the price it is a heck of a deal IMHO. |
Re: 1990 Formula LB9/MM5/3.42 HEre is the key. MK6 TRANSMISSION,MANUAL 5-SPEED(BORG-WARNER) 5-SPD M/TRANS(MK6) 480 This was the total number of LB9/MM5 cars made... The LH0 used the MD8 trans and the L03 used the M39 trans.. The V6 also used the 3.42 axle, but in 1990 there was only 6 of those made (not like anyone want's one) |
Re: 1990 Formula LB9/MM5/3.42 Wow, good find!! |
Re: 1990 Formula LB9/MM5/3.42 Something that looks this nice, if it is as nice as it looks in the pictures, I would hate to go into the hands of a 16 year old that beat the crap out of it... BUt then again, it would make mine more valuable. |
Re: 1990 Formula LB9/MM5/3.42 For that price I would definitely buy it if I were close. Then throw trans am ground effects on it, black pw7s, and a paint job to it and be a happy customer! |

Re: 1990 Formula LB9/MM5/3.42 And there you have the same concerns you do of a 16 year old destroying the car. Either way, the car is lost at that point. It's nice to see one with the two tone paint. I prefer this look, but so many prefer the monotone color scheme without stripes. I wish I could grab this up!! |

It aint that fast anyhow and the black bumper pads and turbo style wheels are not very attractive to me. But that's my opinion. Everyone has their own. If it was gona be for a drag car that's the only way I would leave it because I know its a bit lighter. |
Re: 1990 Formula LB9/MM5/3.42 Lots of folks love em. Yours are extremely nice as are many others ive seen. I actually really like the 91-92 Formulas but on those the Formula emblems on the doors don't look right to me. Regardless of what I prefer or don't though this 90 Formula is a great deal I wouldn't hesitate to buy it I love the color and the 5spd LB9. |
Re: 1990 Formula LB9/MM5/3.42 I am hoping Purely PMD picks it up... He seems to really like the nice ones. I want a Finders pay too... 5% works for me ;) |
Re: 1990 Formula LB9/MM5/3.42 Wow nice find, i only wish i lived closer would love to store this in my garage for a weekend cruiser. That deal is almost to good to pass up. |

At cruising speed, passing never requires a downshift, just a slight nudge of the gas pedal. |
Re: 1990 Formula LB9/MM5/3.42 Just spoke to Joe, seeing it Saturday. :D That's the first chance he has to show it, otherwise I'd be there now. ;) |

Re: 1990 Formula LB9/MM5/3.42 i am just hoping it goes to a nice home is all... shame to waste such an unusual car... In all honesty, I do not remember ever seeing another Maui Blue 1990 Formula LB9/MM5 W/T-tops... |
Re: 1990 Formula LB9/MM5/3.42 Has anyone successfully repaired one of those wrap around spoilers? What is the actual material? Is there a thread here somewhere that goes through the process? I've got to believe with today's materials we can save that one. |
Re: 1990 Formula LB9/MM5/3.42 Here are some things to look at from this car's RPO list D5S Unknown 486 - I have no idea what it is, but I would bet it has to do with the rear axle... That is the exact same number of 3.42 axles. I am thinking it has to do with the gear set for the speedo. D8G SENSOR (D8G) 1,093 - Something to do with the transmission. Either speedo sensor, might be the shift sensor. I believe these are option groups... I just don't remember what they are right now... I've got to believe with today's materials we can save that one. What appears to happen is the rubber apparently is semi-porous, and eventually allows moisture inside. The steel (which apparently was never painted) begins to rust, and as the rust scales off it expands and then it starts to crack the rubber... You can get a special epoxy for bumpers where you buy automotive paint, and use it to fill in the gaps, and make it look better, but it will still be lumpy to some degree... You could grind it down to make it better, but getting it perfect would be a challenge. Honestly you are better off just getting the fiberglass one from Hawks, and paint it... They will last forever... Unfortunately The fiberglass one's do not look as good as the OE one's in my opinion because the spears are too thick. But most people never realize it. But you could get it to look pretty good if you took your time... It will just happen again. I used the epoxy on my front bumper to fill in a crack and no one has ever noticed it... I would think it would be like body filler, you might have to do it several times... epoxy the splits... grind it down, epoxy it again grind it down, Until it is where you want it. Definitely worth a shot |
Re: 1990 Formula LB9/MM5/3.42 The rear spoiler is pretty much a endure type material like the front bumpers of the 70s birds and GTOs. Same repair procedure and materials. I would do the fiberglass wing and make it correct looking |
Re: 1990 Formula LB9/MM5/3.42 Beautiful car and a screaming deal!!!!! |
Re: 1990 Formula LB9/MM5/3.42 Beautiful! Worth the asking price if it as advertised. |

Re: 1990 Formula LB9/MM5/3.42 Its a foam rubber type of stuff. |
Re: 1990 Formula LB9/MM5/3.42 That is a nice looking car! Hope you get it PurelyPMD! Good to see this, bought my 89 350 with 65k miles a yr and a half ago in the same ballpark price wise. I always question "value" on these cars. Most on ebay are overpriced IMO. It is hard to find unmolested ones. Too bad the original radio is gone. My aero wing was replaced with the fiberglass one before purchase. |

Re: 1990 Formula LB9/MM5/3.42 He pushed till next weekend, pretty ****ty here weather-wise. :( |
Re: 1990 Formula LB9/MM5/3.42 Well patience & persistence finally paid off and I picked the car up this morning. Joe bought the car when he was 15 and has owned it for 17 years! This is a really pretty car and it's in amazing original condition - as clean underneath as it is on top. Has a few aftermarket parts on it that I will likely replace with original but nothing that really takes away from it's value. Needs some paint work, the spoiler repaired or replaced and some maintenance items done. Finally some Pontiac 3rd Gen iron in the barn. :D https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.thi...a72f743a59.jpg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.thi...e28c767215.jpg |

Re: 1990 Formula LB9/MM5/3.42 Cool car! Why did it take a year? |
Re: 1990 Formula LB9/MM5/3.42 Nice grab PMD! That funky blue to boot! Even more rare!! Now we are Twinkies! (less the manual that is). Would you mind sharing a photo of your front air dam on that beast. Want to see if it is all black like this: https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/memb...ml#post6004793 |
Re: 1990 Formula LB9/MM5/3.42 Yes, the air dam is all black - I didn't take a photo of it but I will. Chaz, there are some things it needs, some modifications I want to reverse, some paint work and maintenance etc and I had a price in my head on what I would pay so I wouldn't be under water on it when I got done. In the fall we touched base and were still $500 apart and since I didn't have the room or the time to work on it, I didn't break. Last week he contacted me and said he'd take my number - deal got done this morning. Unloading it off the trailer, it's amazingly clean underneath - you would never believe it was a CT car it's whole life! Right & left rear frame rails with their body color overspray on them, underside looking forward on the left & right then the underside of the radiator support. Could use a power washing but very nice otherwise. Some things are leaking, bushings need to be replaced, non factory parts replaced - I'll get it sorted out. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.thi...273752d3d9.jpg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.thi...44fcf28e1b.jpg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.thi...466712da49.jpg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.thi...c3535ec603.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.thi...6337347312.jpg |
Re: 1990 Formula LB9/MM5/3.42 Looks fantastic. Congratulations! |
Re: 1990 Formula LB9/MM5/3.42 Very nice PMD! I'm wondering if this particular color Pontiac put on the textured all black air dam's, while other colors received a different type. Or, maybe they just went to all black in 1990..... I've noticed on some of the two-tone cars that half of the air dam is painted. |
Re: 1990 Formula LB9/MM5/3.42 Looks fantastic! |
Re: 1990 Formula LB9/MM5/3.42 Christmas Day today! Nice Chris. |
Re: 1990 Formula LB9/MM5/3.42 Nice Find PurelyPMD! Looks very clean |
Re: 1990 Formula LB9/MM5/3.42 Wow it looks amazing underneath, and that's what really counts. TPI, 5 speed with T top is an excellent configuration. Minor note - tighten the clamp on the lower rad hose at the water pump. |
Re: 1990 Formula LB9/MM5/3.42 Yeah, thanks - didn't see that when I was under it, but saw it in the picture. Need to check if it's the right hose too. |
Re: 1990 Formula LB9/MM5/3.42 For some reason I thought the lower air dam was the following... I will have to pay more attention, but here we go... 85-88, lower air dam painted with (2-tone) stripe, and unpainted with monochrome. 89-90, All Lower Air Dam were unpainted, I might be wrong, but for some reason that is what I thought... The Parts catalog is not clear... |

Re: 1990 Formula LB9/MM5/3.42 Holy crap...it took me a minute to realize it took a solid year to buy it! Good find! |
Re: 1990 Formula LB9/MM5/3.42 It only took a day to buy it, but it took a year to sell it. ;) |
Re: 1990 Formula LB9/MM5/3.42 I've been playing with Compnine today and got some interesting combinations for 1990. Formula LB9 MK6 - 480 in Maui Blue 23U - 26 in Two Tone 78A - 11 & all of them had the t-tops. I guess blue wasn't popular that year. ;) |
Re: 1990 Formula LB9/MM5/3.42 One of 11, wow. Compnine is a great tool. I know they do not have every VIN but does prove out that Maui blue MK6 Formulas qualify as rare in the right use of the word. |
