Hawks headers!

Anybody else notice the huge price increase in the headers for the LS1 swap! i was dead set on buying the Headers and catted ypipe but now its just getting rediculous from $1400 up to $1800?!?! AND if u go to the web site it first says (for the headers only) "Your Price - $799" then u click on it to read the detailed description and it says "Your Price - $840" which is the price, AN then for the catted ypipe and headers is says $1799, when u go into it it says $1840!! holy rip off!! I've head the quality of the hawks headers is good however u have to reweld the O2 bungs to relocate and keep them from hitting the tranny?? is this true? and i've also read the ypipe doesnt fit all that great, if your paying this much for these headers they better be dead nuts with no issues.. I dont know what i'm going to do but i dont think i will be buying these headers anymore, although it maybe be my only option at this point. I said from day one if i have to make my own headers i'm just gonna make twin turbo headers from the start ;)

whats everyone elses feelings on this.. I notice alot of people buy just the heades and not the ypipe? End Rant..

It'd be cheaper to have Foose or somebody to make headers for you. That's rediculous.

Phatfiddler 07-17-2006 05:12 PM

So if the headers alone are $840, and the headers y-pipe combo with cat is $1840, then you're paying $1000 for a y-pipe an cat?!

Hookers ftw!

Yes 1000 dollars for a ypipe. Well the price alone for just the hawks headers is somewhat reasonable, kinda high but to my knowledge they are the only ones that make ls1 headers for a 3rd gen so they can charge whatever they want and we have to buy them or have a custom set made. The one nice option i do like is if u buy just the headers alone u can order them with a 3inch collector rather than the stardard 2.5 inch collector  for that

Check out this thread ( https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/ltx-...-ls1-swap.html ). If you can watch the video you'll see he used Stainless Works Headers. Good Luck! :chevy:

Hawks headers are made by stainless works

I have street performance midlength's on mine, 399$

I have to chime in here... I got in on the headers and ORY before the price hike. Glad I did. HOWEVER... Im NOT glad that I spent the extra $300 for the ORY. That thing is pure junk. First of all..it has O2 bungs. Why the heck would I need O2 bungs on an ORY with no cats??? Should be an option...OR include some stainless plugs to put in the bungs. Now I have to figure out how to plug them.

Second...Dont get me started on how the y-pipe fits. Or doesnt fit.

Third... The y-pipe is ugly! Where the two pipes join together, if you look in the 3" end, the opening created by the two pieces coming together is more like 2" !!! Now I have to cut the weld for the 3" part, cut all the access tubing out that doesnt need to be in there, and weld the 3" piece back together.

Fourth... The O2 bungs on the headers themselves werent TOO bad. The driverside O2 hit the body of the car. I thought that was stupid. I had to bang a friggin dent in my floor board, to make room for a sensor that could have been welded a few degrees differently. The passenger side seems ok though. Thats after I had to clean up the threads because there was weld blocking the O2 hole. Couldnt get the sensor in. Good thing I didnt just force it or the sensor would have been toast.

When they welded the bungs in...it seems like the heat warped the ends of the tubing. Making it a PITA to get the pieces together. Small issue I know...but for the price I think they could have atleast formed the ends back to round for us. Makes me extra ticked because I dont even need those stinking bungs in the y-pipe.

The # 3 spark plug boot is jammed up against the primary...but thats not a biggie. The solution was sleeves or boot trimmin. I think Ive seen that problem on other headers too...

Here are some pics for the heck of it. I should take one of the y-pipe opening.. All said, I think $700 for the headers isnt bad. But I regret the ORY...and I might just ditch it and make my own. Or cut these up and re-work them how I want.

On a positive... in the pics you can see I have a generous amount of room on the sides of the collectors. I say generous because ive heard so many others say they are extremely tight.

Please dont take this as me bashing hawks or stainless works. I talked to Bruce several times about other things, and he is great to deal with. Im just alittle disappointed in this set up. Its been around long enough that the bugs should be ironed out...and these should be the best choice for anyone doing the swap. I just wanted to vent a bit... because I was hoping the exhaust portion of this wouldnt be such a pain. But it looks like thats going to the be the hardest part of this swap by far.

im trying to score a deal on 4thgen pacesetter uncoated headers.... im going to torch/bend them to fit. some of the 2ndgen swap guys have had success with this, and i figured its worth a shot.

if anyone wants to help me look for a used set, that would be nice...

btw, uncoated pacesetters are ~$300 new..... then its about ~100 to coat them after you bend/cut/weld/whatever them to fit..... thats my plan anyway.

Not everyone is having the 02 problem stated above.
https://www.austinthirdgen.org/album...2808.sized.jpg
However on mine, they are too close to the driver's side frame rail and actually touch the brake and fuel lines, so I had to wrap them as a precaution until I can get the rest of the exhaust on and have it adjusted.

It does seem that every set of Hawks headers talked about here, are different in some way or another, it seems that SW can't seem to make them all the same. As for the price increase, my bet is it now costs Bruce more to get them, so he has to charge you more. Until someone finds and confirms there is another LT header that fits, they are your only option, its a supply / demand thing.

If you cant afford it, there are always the 01+ manifolds, they flow pretty decent for stock.

they must be flowing decent.. i put down 366rwhp at a dyno day last weekend.

SnkSknrZ28 07-18-2006 04:42 PM

no manifolds for me, i need LTs.. i'm over it now, how come u cant go on the stainless works web site and order them direct? sounds bad buf if the middle man thats trying to make money is cut out maybe it'll be cheaper?

I'm gonna look into those mid lengths real quick and see what they look like..

i had the exact same problems, dented my floor board to clear the drivers 02, had to take the header back off due to the weld in the 02 bung which would not allow the 02 to screw in at all, and the #3 is an issue but not a major one. I have cut and rewelded the y-pipe in several places to get it to fot somewhat decent and still am not happy with it. In all honesty i will be c-notching my frame to tuck it up where i want it. It hangs too low right now and my car is still sitting pretty high.. I say buy the headers but save your money on the y-pipe and have one built for it...............jt

StevenK 07-19-2006 10:14 PM

You cant get them from SW because Bruce contracted them to make them for him. If they turned around and sold em to everyone else, they would be breaking their contract with Bruce.

Jt, thats exactly what I was thinking when I ordered mine, save on getting the 'custom' y-pipe from SW and just have them fabbed up when I did the rest of the exhaust. Kinda glad I decided to go that way after hearing all the trouble you ran into on the Y.
