LT1 HELP!!!!!!!!! Just found a lt1 for $250 bucks because the 305 just isnt cutting it. Im sure my question has been asked b4 but in separate topics but i want a full understanding on what im thinking ill need. Please bare with me. 1.the lt1 i found has the fuel injection on it but all i want is the motor. QUESTION 1. Will my atl, power steering brackets, ac smog pump, distributer, bolt onto it.[i have a serpentine setup] 2. i want to keep my tbi unit for the[ sleeper look ] what size injectors do i need to switch to? serial numbers please. 3. What intake manifold do i need?serial numbers please. 4. I have my stock ecm so what style chip do i need? serial number please.[i hear people talk about ebl flash but what to do in the mean time] |
Re: LT1 HELP!!!!!!!!! |
Re: LT1 HELP!!!!!!!!! While I thank you Ronny I don't have a Corvette I have a 1991 camaro. I don't want to try an understand what they did I need to know we did for a successful in stall. |
Re: LT1 HELP!!!!!!!!! 1984 was TBI. My 1984 is running FBody TBI not Vette TBI. So Vette is very similar to F Body as is TBI Truck. Same on ECU. Similar throughout. There are few that would attempt it. Much like dropping a LS in a FBody. Expensive and complicated unless you are a pro mechanic and have the $1,000's of bucks to do it. Granted you could go to salvage yard but some stuff will need fabricating. I would search this site for others that attemted or had desire to do so. Also search Corvette Forum for the TBI to LT1-4 conversion details. I found this https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/ltx-...otor-wont.html |
Re: LT1 HELP!!!!!!!!! Ok ill check it out I just don't want any issues to pop up so I like to only deal with camaro questions not similar issues but ill check it real quick. I want to stick with the basic LT1 people seem to start throwing all sorts of ideas on what to do. I have a basic lt1 I want to put in. Once its in I can starting changing things so keep it simple. |
Re: LT1 HELP!!!!!!!!! That didn't tell me anything. I just want info from camaro people about there camaro build. I Have four questions please no more no less. Threads have a tendency to drift to million different issues so I just want to keep it straight to the point an not get confused.( all I have is the block No harness No ecm for the lt1 No intake. JUST THE BLOCK |
Re: LT1 HELP!!!!!!!!! There's no point in buying just the block of an LT1, unless you're completely rebuilding it which it doesn't sound like you're doing |
Re: LT1 HELP!!!!!!!!! i think he means he has the"long block"assembly-good deal for $250 if its halfway decent shape:) will have to make up custom accesory drive or adapt early 4th gen accesory drives... I googled"carbed '90s LT1"and found all kinds of info on carb (and therefore TBI)and standard distributor usage with these engines. |
Re: LT1 HELP!!!!!!!!! Thats gonna be the first thing I do is real build it then ill put it in. I'm not trying to have supersonic speed just more than my 305. I just want to know if ill need anything else for the swap. Cuzz I have taken parts off my 305 an put it on a 350 that ran fine. But I havnt dealt with a lt1 yet. I just want to have everything I need when I drop it off next week.. |
Re: LT1 HELP!!!!!!!!! 8tzchen I was looking at the picture of the motor an it has all the assembly brackets an alt.Water pump.intake basically eveything .... it has the harness .so if it has the brackets can I use my old alt, waterpump ...on the lt1. Also if I find a ecm for the lt1 will it effect my dash gauges or do I have aa electic shop put the two harnesses together. |
Re: LT1 HELP!!!!!!!!! At this point I just wanna know the easiest way to get this motor in. SO basically its picture a lt1 sitting on the floor with your tbi camaro next to it an you want to know how to get that motor in that car.lol |
Re: LT1 HELP!!!!!!!!! 1 Attachment(s) Heres the motor I called to see if he had the computer but he hasn't hit me back yet. |
Re: LT1 HELP!!!!!!!!! Looks like a '94-97 f-body LT1,'93s had different alternator and 'vettes had different accesories. the LT1 had a special reverse flow cooling system and gear-driven water pump(driven by gear teeth on front of timing sprocket)TBI ECM cannot operate the LT1s "optispark"distributor,so you will need to adapt a 94-97 LT1 ecm into the car if you do complete LT1 swap. LT1 block still has hole for standard dizzy,so with that ,a correct intake manifold and the cooling system adapted, you could run a TBI on it:) |
Re: LT1 HELP!!!!!!!!! Good luck using your old water pump on the LT1. |
Re: LT1 HELP!!!!!!!!! Why would u dumb down an lt1 by putting a tbi on it? If u want a sleeper look put a "tune port injection" plaque on the lt1s throttle body and say the optispark is a race ignition setup(lol). I don't get the whole sleeper thing honestly.if I put an lt1 in my car I would want the world to know. |
Re: LT1 HELP!!!!!!!!! Platy that's cool for you but I don't want the attention. Its mainly for smog sir I can't go to a smog station with a tbi car with a tpi on it. Los Angeles has the weather but on the bad side it has smog requirements. I found the thread I was looking for so this thread is considered over. |
Re: LT1 HELP!!!!!!!!! But I do appreciate the positive feed back I've gotten so far. |
Re: LT1 HELP!!!!!!!!! Thank z chev so your saying Imma need to find a ecm for the motor. |
Re: LT1 HELP!!!!!!!!! if you run it as a complete LT1 you will need an LT ECM but if you adapt TBI and a standard intake manifold mounted distributor to the LT1 long block, you could run it with the TBI ecm(custom tuning might be needed for best results)Have you decided/found out what to do about the cooling system and belt-driven accesories?AFAIK,LT1 can only use the gear driven waterpump and a standard belt driven one will not fit. |
Re: LT1 HELP!!!!!!!!! Z chev honestly with all this info I'm finding out I really think its not worth my time an money on a lt1 swap. Today I called afew engine shop an they were saying I could get a 350 roller motor and 0.30 over an use flat top piston an get numbers of about 320 horses or so. All I really want is a motor rated in that area so once I do my bolt ons I should be better off in horsepower. As you can see I have 22"are rims so racing every car on the street is out I just wanna beat 3rdgens an afew fourth an fifth ones. The feeling you get when u pass a new car is so wonderful I feel like a kids in a candy store. |
Re: LT1 HELP!!!!!!!!! ??? V chev if I put a shift kit in will the change my overdrive. Somebody told me it might happen cuzz with these 373 gears my freeway would be annoying |
Re: LT1 HELP!!!!!!!!! Just remembered certain '94-96 full size cars came with a "baby LT1",4.8L IIRC-i don't know if those have same accesory drive as f-bods,some of those cars with LT1 style engines and heavy duty cooling option had a belt- driven clutch fan off to the side of the gear-driven W/P:) |
Re: LT1 HELP!!!!!!!!! yeah, would be easier to use a standard block instead of converting the LT1(easier disguise for the smog police too) LT1s are a cool engine though, would be cool to swap that in if you could:) |
Re: LT1 HELP!!!!!!!!! I read that also so that added another wrench in buying it. The owner had no idea so I changed my mind. |
Re: LT1 HELP!!!!!!!!! Lt1 have better cooling so I wanted to try it also. Z chev did you read my reply on shift kits? |
Re: LT1 HELP!!!!!!!!! shift kit won't change the rpm-ratios remain the same, shift kit only changes shift firmness and when the shift occurs. 3.73 gears are a little deep with a 700r4,could swap those for 3.42 or 3.23 to make 1st more usable and lower the overdrive cruise RPM-i like my 3.42s with my torque-biased engine. Idea with the LT1's reverse flow cooling was the heads would run cooler to reduce chance of detonation, while the cylinder bores would run hotter so the oil film viscosity would be lower-reducing friction and wear. In the mid 1980s, reverse flow cooling was something engineers were really looking into-and GM adapted the idea for the LT1,going back to standard coolant flow for the all new LS design:) |
Re: LT1 HELP!!!!!!!!! Gotcha thanks for the info |
Re: LT1 HELP!!!!!!!!! Obviously I don't know if this is true or not since I don't live in ca but I was always told u can swap motors out there as long as the motor was same year or newer, same vehicle class(truck, car,hd truck,etc..)and all emission equipment it was fine and legal as long as it got recertified (or w/e its called by the smog policeout there),could pass both visual and tailpipe tests, and the donor ecm was running it and the ses light worked. |

Re: LT1 HELP!!!!!!!!! Ok you ve lost me somewhere.other than the "sleeper" aspect what is ur reasoning? Ur pic of ur motor is complete.seem like all u need is an ecm and a wiring harness.and recertification(w/e that means). Why don't u give a ring to ur local smog authorities and ask about motor swaps and what u need to do instead of tbi'ing an lt1 and trying to pull a fast one on an inspector that more than likely wont work. edit also keep in mind the off the shelf intake for a carb(which u ll need with a Tbi adapter)is a gm performance part with no provision for egr. |
Re: LT1 HELP!!!!!!!!! Thanks but nit that big a deal Imma go the route the engine shop said by just putting a 350 block with the flat top pistons, 0.30 roller everything an add some Bolt on's an enjoy what I get cuzz I'm sure its waywaywayway then this 305. Platy stop coming across so sarcastic. You may no alot but there's ways to say it bro. Thirdgens Up everyone else down that's my moto |
Re: LT1 HELP!!!!!!!!! Wasn't trying to come across sarcastic...just kind of heads upish...but yea anythings better thn a 305 lol |
Re: LT1 HELP!!!!!!!!! Platy questions for you. How do you make a 355 block. |
Re: LT1 HELP!!!!!!!!! To make a 355, you just take a 350 block, and bore the cylinders .030 over, and keep the stock 3.480 stroke, so you'd only HAVE to buy new pistons 4.030" for size (.030" over) but if you're going to buy rods and a new crank with it, you're better off getting the 383 kit, which still has the .030 larger bores, just a longer stroke, and for basically the same price |
Re: LT1 HELP!!!!!!!!! So basically if you're doing a full rebuild, you'd get more for your money with a 383, but if you just want to go with a 355, make sure you get flat top pistons so you get higher compression, thats where you'll see most of the gain, not as much with the 5 extra cubes |

find the cheapest place that does that.theres ur 355.u ll want (cant think of the rating right now)injectors off a (88-93iirc)350 caprice cop car and a chip burnt for ur stock ecm after u figure out what cam ur gonna run headers etc.. |

say fellaz quick question i was just thinking of weather there was a way to do some sort of 383 swap that doesnt have that idle. i would like tgo put a 383 but the way the engine idles will give me away. so i guest my question is can i use the 383 crank but use a cam that doesnt idle as rough but still get nearly as much hp an torque? |
Re: LT1 HELP!!!!!!!!! If u go with a "stockish idle" cam,u might not want to run those caprice injectors and just run truck tbi350 injectors.they re way cheaper anyways.iirc the caprice injectors were $200/injector new at advance auto.something like 60/injector for the truck ones. |
Re: LT1 HELP!!!!!!!!! Cool thanx bro I was thinking that when you replied about the injectors. Do I need to say a certain year |
Re: LT1 HELP!!!!!!!!! Now when you say burn a chip for the ecm. I hear people say buy a separate chip an some people say they plug some sort of device in and program your upgrades in but I think that's for newer models. Do you know the type of chip I need to buy an how to program it. |

Re: LT1 HELP!!!!!!!!! I would recommend an osterich chip emulator.u can make "on the fly" changes to ur ecm with a laptop.then find a 305 tbi bin file to start with and adjust things accordingly.as for year of injectors, the ones I m running are for an 88 1500 iirc w/350(w/e my gf's friends husbands truck is). U might also want to look for the ultimate mod tbi stuff. |

Re: LT1 HELP!!!!!!!!! Yes. Mine is set to 6200 rpms on engine and 6000 on spray. |
