1992 4L60 TC lockup ?'s Hello all, I'll start out by saying I do have a 4L60 trans But it isn't in the Firebird it was made for. It now resides in my 68 C10 SBC (305) Truck. My question is being its in a transplanted vehicle and not hooked up to what it would have been in a Firebird is there any way I could find out what or how it was hooked up to when in the Firebird? I am looking for info so that I can have the trans hookup into the TC lockup mode by nothing other then what it would have been in the Firebird. Backyard aftermarket parts & wires with toggle switch's is what I am trying to avoid. thanks in advance for any help or links, Marvin |
Re: 1992 4L60 TC lockup ?'s You most likely can wire stock(-ish) The 4-position connector on the side of the trans should have 3 terminals in the harness connector to it: Power, +12 volts from brake pedal switch. Open when on the brakes. Ground, comes from the ECM to lock the TCC. Also goes to ALDL connector. 4th Gr switch, tells the ECM when the transmission is actually in OD (4th gear). RBob. |

If I am understanding this right the brake light sw kinda is taking the place of the ECU/ECM since my truck is a 68 C10 that isn't equipped with one ECU/ECM ? This will make the TC lockup and un lock when slowing down in the same way and function the same as it would be in its donor car (firebird) as this trans did come from one ? |
Re: 1992 4L60 TC lockup ?'s 1 Attachment(s) The brake pedal switch is fed IGN+ switched power. The other terminal on the switch goes on to the trans. This switch opens when the pedal is depressed. Forcing the TCC to unlock. The ECM provides a ground to energize the TCC solenoid in the trans. Since you aren't using an ECM there are vacuum operated TCC sets available. GM used them in various vehicles that didn't come with an ECM. There is a good thread here on TGO about them. The picture is how GM wired the '92 f-body trans connector. The letters to ID the terminals are molded into the connectors. Be sure to get the power to the solenoid with the proper polarity. Otherwise the diode pops. RBob. |

Not sure what you mean by "Proper Polarity"? The remainder of the PM is discussed prior to this post. RBob. |

I should have ask this question first (maybe dumb) but I really don't know the answer. DOES THE 4L60's IN ITS STOCK 1992 FIREBIRD PLATFORM HAVE A LOCKUP TORQUE CONVERTER SYSTEM STANDARD EQUIPMENT FOR THE TRANS OR DOES THIS TRANS NEED A " AFTERMARKET LOCKUP KIT" TO DO THE JOB EVEN IF IT IS IN ITS STOCK FIREBIRD TO LOCKUP? |
Re: 1992 4L60 TC lockup ?'s In '92 the ECM controlled the TCC lockup. Factory stock. I explained a lot of this is my previous posts within this thread. RBob. |

RBob. ***I will re read back to see what I must have missed.***This might be redundant but I will ask it anyway or again. If the ECM's job was just to supply a 12v signal to the trans to lock it up in 4th gear when the trans went into 4th cant that same 12v signal be delivered by a Keyed On Ignition type signal or from anything that is 12v hot only when ignition is on? It just seams simple that the ECM is taken out of the equation and a simple fix would be to activate the system by a 12v signal? Kinda curious why there is so many different ways in doing a simple job. RBob I will go back over this thread, thanks |
Re: 1992 4L60 TC lockup ?'s The ECM doesn't supply the +12 V. See my first post in this thread. RBob. |
