How about making a button at the top of each post to "report this thread" so that it will send a message to moderators to keep a closer eye on it, poss. lock the thread.

to report the thread, just click either the 1st post, or the reply where the thread starts to take a turn for the worse.
you get to type in why you're reporting it... you can just mention what you want to say directly to the acting mod thru that..
