just a few questions/comments.

First off, I love the board, been on it a few years, and there is lots on good stuff here with an equally good crew that belongs to it.

However there are some quirks and such. I always hear this is a tech board, so no BS. I like that, its good. The flame wars have died out since i joined, another good thing. But you get a lot of people that ask basic questions, answered by stickies most of the time, but many others are not. So what happens to the ones that arent? 3 very unhelpful words."Do a search"

One other non-thirdgen forum i was on, a tech only forum as well, explicitly had a notice up saying that telling someone to do a search was in no way helping them, and just wasting space on the site. I had to agree with that. If you dont have the info, then dont post. Opinions are always welcome, and info can be considered golden sometimes. Searches dont always find what you need. You can always devise a system that could delete unanswered posts after a certain amount of time, this way there arent 25 unanswered posts, and the ones that do get an answer can be valued as useful. When people use this site, like many others, they know that you can do a search. Like i said, it just doesnt always work.

one thing with saying do a search is often i know whatever is there because i seen it but i'm not going to take the time or effort to find it for them. another thing is doing a search find an unlimited number of answers other than the one i could provide. on the boards i moderate i try to let nothing go unanswered but my time and knowledge is as limited as anyones.

I wasnt asking for an answer to be provided for every question asked. Usually if someone asks a question and it goes unanswered, then that person will do a search on their own. Likewise a person that is asking usually has already done a search, and turned up empty handed.

We will ban all people that do not Search first! Including the starter of this topic!

Honestly though, if some people didn't say "Search" people would just be answering the same stuff over and over again. Some people do overlook the feature, trust me.

From another site that i frequent....

and i think they sum it up well.

The staff of ******.com has become aware that you, oh timid newbie, may be wary of posting your musings on our little corner of the Internet. You may fear having to wear the title “*** Clown “ like a scarlet letter for the duration of your stay, or facing one of our Parliament style shout downs. But, young fragile newbie, we want to make you feel welcome and answer your questions. To ease the process we suggest you heed the following advice:

First, research our topics to see if your question has already been answered. The site is equipped with a search function that allows you to browse past discussions. Not only might you find an answer to your question, you will also find a great archive of accumulated knowledge that you may wish to read at any time.

Be patient. The simplest questions are often answered last. Many people here have been on Internet discussion boards for quite some time and are reluctant to draft answers to questions that they may have posted several times before.
