new ad is very annoying
I'm stunned, the following post by Grim is much better than I could have worded it myself.
The bottom sign up is approx. 100px high and it is completely removed when you log in, along with a couple other ads. No relevant content is covered once you scroll down.
If you feel that I am defensive about the placement of it, you must realize that I need to let it run for a relative amount of time to see if it is actually beneficial to the site. If, when the data is collected and has not shown any drastic increase in membership, then I'd be willing to take suggestions of removing it or adding a cookie that when you close it, it will stay off the page from there on out.

The point that everyone misses, Dirk sold TGO for a very good reason, he could no longer afford to fund it. As TGO grew and web traffic increased, it required more cash for equipment upgrading etc. TGO was a victim of its own success. Unfortunately, without some method of funding, Dirk was tired of forking the bill.
He tried donations, etc; but that only help out partially, and then for only a short period of time.
There are only TWO WAYS TGO can remain online; either members must pay a subscription service OR TGO must utilize advertising. Take your pick. I can tell you, if there was a membership/subscription service there would be LOUDER SCREAMS than there is now. I doubt TGO would last very long as a "subcription fee" site.
In all honesty, if Xoxide had not bought the site from Dirk, I suspect Dirk was close to "calling it quits" and ready to pull the plug. Then where would TGO be? Just another "dead Internet website" like so many others that have come and gone.
Unfortunately, there are no free lunches in this world. Unless a venture can generate enough cash to pay the bills or have the support of a major philanthropist, it goes out of business. Until TGO can become a registered charity, receive government funding and issue tax deductible receipts for all the donations it receives (dream on), it needs to generate revenue from some means to keep operating.
I spent many years early in my career working as a Receiver in Bankruptcy (I've actually have been called "the Grim Reaper"). Each company that I was sent in to "re-org" always had the same problem, more expenses than revenues. And without some means of TGO generating enough cash to pay the lights, the lights will go out.
So take your pick, some advertising to keeps the lights on? Or have Xoxide just turn out the lights? Because without some advertising, Xoxide will not fund TGO and there will not be any TGO. Then all this "great technical information" will just go down the drain and be lost forever.
Frankly, if I was the controller of Xoxide (and later in my career I have been the Chief Financial Officer and Vice President of Finance for a number of companies), I would be challenging the CEO why Xoxide bothers wasting any time or resources on TGO and recommend that we bury it and move on to better ventures.

Dave, I just wanted to let you, JT and the rest of the Admins & Xoxide know that you are close to the "perfect balance" IMO. The level of advertising, content and placement is just fine.
As I am always "logged on" when I come to TGO, I never saw the foot banner. But I immediately noticed when you stopped using those links on the right a couple of weeks ago to "Cheat at Poker and Hot Local Ladies".
I just thought that it was about time that you got some positive feedback, so you know that things are not as bad as some others would have you believe.
I even make a point of clicking on some of those Google Ads on the top every now and then to help pay the light bill.

I agree. You can't make everyone happy, but atleast they are open to thoughts and ideas. I understand Ads are needed, but I complained about the "Cheat at Poker and Hot Local Ladies". I just thought they were totally useless and kind of brought the site down a bit.
I also agree. We're not here to load the site with ads that we don't feel users at some point might find interest in. There are numerous advertising programs out there and we need to take some time to try each one out to see how relevant they become.
Initially, they will spurt out any advertisement and for the good ones, they will pick up relevant content. Unfortunately the Cheat at Poker and Hot Local Ladies was not one of them.
I appreciate the support that some of you members are offering. And clicking an ad here or there just to show your support is awesome. I can't thank you enough about making me feel not so horrible about the effort I put into this site. Thanks

There are several views from both sides of the fence in this thread and have to say that there are pros and cons to both sides.
At this time I am always logged in and do not see too much of the negative items listed as far as pop up banners and advertising. But I do agree with John in that the forum lists have grown quite busy especially with the [popular threads] list under the forum descriptions.
As far as the advertisements it isn't too bad for myself. [At this time]
I do commend whomever for as stated above for getting rid if the gambling/date adds. Now don't get me wrong I'm no prude. I play the Lotto and like good T & A as well as the next guy but this was just not the place for it.

That alone i feel is what is making the forums feel cluttered.Side question: In the classifieds ad what should suspension components go under?
Even though I'm one of the more obnoxious members here, I gotta hand it to you Xoxide guys because you actually bother to answer us when we find something to whine about and are sincere about it.
We never heard anything from Dirk, I figured he was dead and that the other admins were just covering.
The banner is obviously gone now and I doubt you'll see many members wanting it back, but for what it's worth, the basic idea of inviting people to sign up was never really a crime.

Lord if I had more time I'd love to point out all the bloody fallacies in this thread. You guys just don;t get it. Additionally, there is another option to the BS 'No TGO' crap... sell it to another enthusiast. To put words in Dirk's mouth and assume his reasoning for selling is also rather... well, I'll pass for now.
Oh, if you think PC is worth 'watching' keep an eye on me... when I do eventually stop by. It really hasn't been worth it recently, as I've observed earlier.
