So I made a comment about This a week ago in another topic and got a good response but it's still stirring in my mind, because I got 100% confirmation today.
Situation is...
I have waited 20 years for my dream car which I am about 90% complete building. Just replacing little things now that don't really need to but I want it mint. It's my 1987 IROC Z that I currently am driving.
Last year this young kid sees my Car, tells my Buddy he loves it.. awesome, thanks for the compliment. So he picks up a 1987 IROC Z that's White. He has plans to restore it and I am thinking I can't wait to see it done... no other White ones around.
Fast forward to this year, my Buddy calls him last week while we are cruising around and has the kid on speaker.
Tells him he's painting his Car Blue Identical to mine. Well this doesn't sit well with me.
So I speak up, ask him why doesn't he restore It to White or to Silver like he originally was thinking.
The little punk tells me to "lick his nuts" he seen my Car and wants one like it.
So I get a pic today and the car is done. Painted blue, with the engine waiting to go back in.
There only like 8 IROC Zs in my area and none are Blue. I am having a hard time understanding why someone would copy a Car thats now a Classis and would want to see the identical car driving around that you just spent a lot of cash and time to build.
Really not happy about this... what's your guys thoughts?
This says more about you than about the kid. He's doing what he wants and what he likes - nut lickers opinions be damned. Good for him!
It's a compliment ya know. He likes what you have done. Why don't you offer to help him out and be a positive, empowering force for his young enthusiasm.
A blue IROC..... I saw one earlier today. It's not like this is a rare thing..... yet.
I care because I took the time to find a Blue IROC, with T-Bars and the 350 TPI.
Are you telling me that if you live in a small city, go to a car show-every car show, and BAMN there's an identical car as yours?
Yes I absolutely take it as a compliment but I don't see the point in building something identical to another.
He doesn't need my help, he's got guys building it for him, and I dont know him, my Buddy does.

A tinge of annoyance is one thing, but it really shouldn't bother you much more than that. You own a car for you, not anyone else.
I think you are right... Annoyed is the proper word. I'd love to see the car completed and glad a young kid is restoring a 3rd gen. A different colour would be nice to see representing 3rd Gens!
If he's having other people do it for him then he's got nothing on you if you have done it yourself.
Regardless.....
It's pretty clear that your real desire is to having something unique for car shows. If that's your desire then you have to do something other than a plain blue IROC. Too new and they built too many of them. Too many still around.
I wanted something unique so I took a (clapped out, sat in the woods for 11 years) Trans Am and am turning it into a Grand Theft Auto 5 "Runier GT" clone. Just to be completely different. Black with Orange.... something like this......
Because I can. And because it's what I want. And no way will I see anything remotely like it. I know my vinyl guy won't sell the graphics to anyone else. Lol.
Oh just realized you're in Canada. Yeah probably not as many as down here in the states. I did see a blue (faded) IROC today in Portland though. LoL.
That's not my car. Just a representation of what I'm going to do. I've got the black paint on and the mesh in my hood vents is orange.... My graphics guy is working on the vinyl. I'll post pics when it's installed.
you don't really own the copyright to blue IROCs...
I'd be more pissed he was a disrespectful little a-hole than painting his car the same color, unless of course you were giving him enough crap to deserve it.
Slap a gigantic blower on yours and mini-tub it.
I've got a blue IROC too, how dare you copy MY car!
See how silly that is? Now go shake hands and be friends. You two can be twinsies at the car shows. What's more rare than two buds with identical cars at every car show?
You guys are missing the point.... I didn't say I don't think there should be another Blue IROC around. I find it amusing that someone would copy another persons car. People should Have some originality and come up with their own ideas.
I will be happy to see another mint IROC around, again I was just amused that someone would change a cars colour from the original especially when IROC Zs are rare in my area.
But not rare in general. You can easily have one shipped for not much cost. Cars are an inter-state commodity.
An IROC is not a big deal. At a car show or anywhere else. It's just isn't. It's still just a regular car. A bit older than most on the road but there's nothing rare about it.
I think that us "missing the point" is the point we're trying to make. Don't be upset, irritated, or annoyed that someone saw something and decided it looked better than their original plan, so they changed it.
I still think you should pal up to him. You've already got a friend in common, now car colors, and plus it is a LOT easier to make fun of someone's car when your buds. like this Heck, my friends are the guys I make fun of the most, we're always picking on each other for our cars being better than theirs in some way... hp, paint, interior, auto vs manual trans., A/C, cruise... the list goes on and on. Ultimately, don't be butt hurt because someone decided they liked a different color better. I wouldn't have painted a white car blue, that's why I bought a blue car, but to each his own. I will say that if he starts dressing like you then you have something to worry about.

I am in Eastern Canada. IROC Z Camaro's are rare. For me to get the desired Car I wanted-Blue, with T-Bars and the 350 TPI, I flew to Toronto from Nova Scotia which is 1800kms, and drove the Car home.

So how was the drive? Long distance for most people with third gen's to do. Calming? Joyous? Tiring?
Well considering I wanted this Car for alot of years it was miles of smiles.
Soon as I got on the highway the Sun was gleaming so the T-Bars came out.
I have driven across Canada multiple times so this short trip wasn't bad at all.
The Car cruised very well and straight on the highway.
My mind was rolling thinking of all the restoration ideas I had to get done.

Regardless of them being hard to find in your area, they are not rare.
These are two different things.
And these days it's pretty easy to have a car shipped any distance. Usually cheaper than the plane ticket and gas to drive it.
It seems all the pro-touring LSx third gen builds I've seen lately are going blue. If it bothers you, stay off social media and also don't look at the Detroit Speed build in this forum!
Again, missing the point guys. It's not about how many Blue IROCs are all over Canada and the USA.
It's simply about someone copying another car, when there's was originally some other colour. We live in a small city and I enjoy seeing different Classic Cars, not 2 or 3 of the same model in the same colour.
Dlinger made a good point, mine is original!
None of you better ever never ever even think about painting your car orange !!!!
Kidding , just kidding , I did think about this for a bit before I responded , and if someone in my neighborhood wanted to copy ol orangebird , , well best of luck to em , he's gonna have to lock the doors for all the hot women that'll be chasing him like a rockstar !!!
Well my Camaro is not brown but I did see a very pristine brown with tan interior berlinetta on the web with the factory whitewalls.
Now, as far as the copying of the blue Iroc, Out-Cast, our friend to the North, your Iroc is factory blue and this kid went as far as to seek out the exact same factory blue hue, not lighter or darker, but the same blue as yours?
What would **** me off would be the "lick my *****" comment. I would send him those truck nuts they sell and tell him to lick mine. LOL Btw, don't do as I say as I've been known to be a bit --->
Yes he went to the shop where I bought my paint and got them to mix up the same paint code... OEM Blue for 1987. Now there's a little more I should have stated that added the fuel to my fire. The "lick my nuts" comment from him was the major factor, but apparently the guy who painted my Car gave him the code off my Can of paint so yes it's going to be pretty much exact.
So between his stupid comment and the guy giving him the exact paint code then yes I am/was very pissed off.
And yes I realize the paint code for the 1987 IROC can be obtained easily, but when it's bought from the same Shop it's going to be almost exact.

Sounds like you have a really nice car "Out Cast".
I would love to see a few photos of it.
As far as being up set about him copying your paint color, etc. I can see your point.
Your entitled to it.
The problem might be that its a stock color right.
Now if it were custom, then I would even be upset to a degree.
If the kid acts like a jerk on the road that could fall back on you a little bit.
Being that your cars look the same.
I would think for your own piece of mind, don't let it drive you crazy man. The damage is done now all you can really do about it is be the bigger man.
Hes a kid, and most kids don't know any better.

Thanks very much.
I see you are from Ontario. I got it in Toronto but It didn't look like this when I got it.
I sent some pics to the previous owner last year and he was shocked to see the difference.
Awesome car! I'd be surprised if the other blue car comes close to being as nicely done as yours. The people who will confuse the two will likely not fully appreciate an IROC as nice as yours. Those who know cars will appreciate yours.
I'm glad you took that in good humor , and yea , you've got a great point that any guy who would tell another guy to lick his ***** is a guy who can be counted on to drive like a complete jackass ! I can see the trouble explaining to the nice officer that the blue Camaro that just did the 200 foot two tire burnout he got a report of was actually someone else , some punk with a ball licking fetish , instead of you .
You do have a really good lookin car. Am I crazy, those don't look like 3rd gen Camaro seats to me. Maybe swap in firebird seats? It'd be neat if they were a Export car specific thing.

The "lick his nuts" part really got me laughing. Sorry man you have the right to feel however you want. Also, don't look at my signature line, might anger you some more. LOL.

You are correct on the Firebird seats. When I bought the car mine were FUGGED. I came across these at a great price and they are in excellent condition.
I am still looking for the "deluxe" cloth seats that came in the 1987 in Black but they are very hard to find. I am almost at the point of buying the replacement seat covers and then resoration of the car is done!
Beautiful! Is that yours or his? I always get them confused...
This one in those pics is my Car. I won't be posting any pics of his car
It's going to be a sharp looking IROC when he's done, well it should be he's copying mine...
Thanks for the compliments guys.
