History / OriginalityGot a question about 1982-1992 Camaro or Firebird history? Have a question about original parts, options, RPO codes, when something was available, or how to document your car? Those questions, answers, and much more!
Yeah I just spent like an hour reading it...wow...wow...so amazing...personally I think he's crazy for selling it...Im sure it will be sold soon if not already...15K seems ridiculously low...Iv seen ur basic IROCS advertised and sold on websites WAYYYY higher than that...I messed up...should have waited a few months...would have cut him a check and bought this lol...its an amazing car I am a bit confused tho...did it come looking like this race car or more of a ordinary car??? Or was this custom tweaked by Pontiac on the insides to look like the race car which it is???
Also the process of how the car was actually kind of born...made and sold legit wise with a vin is also a bit confusing to me...
It's 100% legit & all in the thread, magazine article and explained in the auction description.
O I didn't mean it wasent...I guess since I have not been around this stuff as much as others...younger person talking...trying to take my mind back in time and understand the exact way these cars were IMO...or sounds like secretly sold sort of is confusing.
Like basically its a somewhat bad explanation in my own words, but its almost like GM had there rules and regulations on how things were to be sold...but some shall we say loopholes...or ways to get around the "proper" way to sell something were done correct? I'll have to go back on this thread and really re read the part where the guy had it for 4 months...then...see I already got lost...or the part about how they were company cars too...that's all confusing to me...

Certain level employees were provided vehicles as part of their compensation. They would drive them for 3 months or a prescribed number of miles & then turn them back in. All employees were allowed to purchase vehicles at a discount and could "tag" driven vehicles to be purchased upon turn-in. This is one of those cases.
John Bennett who was an engineer at GM Chassis specified/ordered this vehicle as someone's (likely his bosses) vehicle and when it was turned back in purchased it at a discount. It was priced and built early in the model year - 08/14/89 VIN sequence #202763 and not delivered/invoiced to the buyer (John Bennett) until 12/22/89.
We know the ship to & bill to are different because of these numbers - 07-836 which is the zone & dealer bill-to numbers for Jim Waldron Pontiac, Buick, GMC Truck and the Ship to of 60-278 which are the internal zone number for GM (60) and 278 for GM Chassis Division where John Bennett worked.
John would have had to go to the dealer to make the payment and handle the paperwork but the car likely never left GM Chassis before he took it to turn it into a race car.

Thanks for the clarification on this! So the 60 ship zone # basically meant that it went to Jim Waldron Pontiac dealership??? Where was that dealership located...down the road from the GM place that John Bennet worked at possibly? Thanks
60 is the zone code for GM internal divisions - 278 is the division code for GM Chassis in Flint MI.
07 is the zone code for Michigan dealerships - 836 is the dealer code for Jim Waldron Pontiac Buick, GMC Trucks in Davison MI - which is approximately 12 miles from the plant and either the closest Pontiac dealer to it, or to John's home.
purelyPMD I think this car is both to the people who know what it is. but there are not a ton of third gen enthusiasts and probably only a handful of them know what this car is (I only know from following your thread on it). its like a TTA, to a thirdgenner its an awesome mechanical piece of engineering and art, to the average joe its just a trans am.
Well right now it's got this car blocked in & that's one of the ones I want to be driving - so since it hasn't sold, it's going to the back of the barn!
The Volvo auto museum in IL would probably be interested in that car. They are always looking for unique cars with a lot history. May want to give them a call. I could see them adding that car to their museum collection.
If this car is a '90, why is it wearing a '91-'92 front fascia?
And a special Aluminum Hood? I can only speculate but being that John Bennett worked for GM and had access to these parts and that 1990 was such a short production year and he received the car right before the cutoff, I would guess he decided to change them to match the new body style when he built the car for the American Sedan series.

It's a California show car, done twice - once in the mid 70's in black and then this scheme in the late 70's. Has Recaro seats, ASC power sunroof, Blaupunkt stereo, Cragar sport slats & Fan Star wheels, Ansen Traction bars, etc.. Only has 14,000 miles on it as it sat in a garage outside of LA for 30 years after breaking a distributor gear.
O wow...thats awesome...those seats...man that's too cool. Do u have a pic of them? I got a quote for my seats to be redone with the 82C code and it's by a place a lot of ppl referred me to on here...cant reme.ber the name.
