IROC Originality Question/Concerns

Hey Guys, I am looong at a 1987 IROC and have some concerns about some minor issues being that it only has 33,100 miles on it.
He's asking top $ for the car so want to make sue its all original and i am waiting on the RPO codes.
It has a factory GM Alarm system and theres a key pad right below the centre vents.
He tells me the following:
1-Headliner is coming apart to the point that he has to "stuff' it back in place when the T-Bars are 0ut
2-Theres some Fish Eyes in the paint on the hood-Car was never painted it came from the factory like this- I know earlier 80s models Camaros had this issue but wasnt aware the IROCs did??
3-Transmission has a "clunk" when put into Drive but goes away once everything is warmed up?
4-Someone tried to jack up the car in the wrong spot and the fender is out by abouot 1/4"
5-Tires, calipers and exhaust have been changed out which I really dont have a problem with.

Re: IROC Originality Question/Concerns

I don't think Irocs ever had a factory alarm, but....I've been wrong before. I think there were dealer installed alarms though.

...as for everything else, it sure doesn't sound like a "top dollar" car. I'd pass.

EDIT- A top dollar "original" car is top dollar because it DOES NOT have those issues. That's why it's top dollar. I suppose we could discuss price vs. issues, but.......man it just sounds like one to pass on.

Have serious doubts about the "fish eyes" in the factory paint. I agree with Abubaca. It may a great car but it sure doesn't sound like what I would call "top dollar original"

Re: IROC Originality Question/Concerns

I know the Quality Control on these were ifffy at best. But I think that if a car rolled off the line and had fish eyes in the hood paint, I would have to think it would have been corrected before it left the factory.
Agree...Pass on this one.

It's very far from a project car. I have a video of the car and it looks brand new. The only thing I am worried about, and I contacted a local shop and for a full complete rebuild its $2600..Professional shop and great reputation.

This car was a GM Executives car, sold to another GM executive and then the current owner has had it for 7 years, put 800 miles on it.
I dont think it came off the Assembly line with the fish eyes in the hood. I was told it would ahve been from a cheical reaction. Maybe something spilt on it, or maybe the guy os pulling my leg and the hood was painted.

Can I run the VIN number anywheres to see the cars history? I would think he shouldn't hesitate to give it to me?

I appreciate the comments as this is why i posted here. Thanks!

Re: IROC Originality Question/Concerns

The transmission "clunk" is more than likely a 700R4 built prior to I believe October 1986. Mine clunks when I put it into drive and mine was built in September 1986. There was an extra pump installed thereafter.

I would say more like off the assembly line as it was owned by a GM Executive from new.

Re: IROC Originality Question/Concerns

Goodwrench is GM aftermarket. Think one of the spare windows in my 'annex' has that same sticker. Don't remember the donor car having a keypad, but it did have a "STUD" vanity plate and Taz seat covers. LOL

Edit: Had to check my memory... Yup.

Re: IROC Originality Question/Concerns

Because in general rpo definitions tend to be broad and generic, and at times the text definition changes. If anything it says more about the source of your definition than the actual car.

Yep...dealer installed. My T/A have the decal and keypad. The module is removed and in a bag in storage (waiting for me to die so my children can throw it away). I have the remote and dealer brochure for mine too (brochure in bottom left corner of photo).

Re: IROC Originality Question/Concerns

Good to know.
I am going to try to sell my Car and pick this one up. As my Buddy said I am basically trying to pick apart the car and its just little things. The "fish Eyes" is just about 4-5 very small spots that looks like dust particles in the paint.
I have to think that wouldnt have happened with this Generation Camaro but cant say for sure.

Re: IROC Originality Question/Concerns

Dirt I could believe. Dirt happens. Fish eyes (small round craters in the paint, where moisture form the compressed air, or oil from the compressor or another contaminant), where the paint moved away from a foreign substance is far more rare in factory paint.

Re: IROC Originality Question/Concerns

Here's the spot on the hood he is talking about. And the pic of the front nose section, it looks to be a different color. I know on the older Camaro's the plastic caused fading of the paint.

Re: IROC Originality Question/Concerns

Looks more like rust bubbles under the paint to me from what I see there. Not sure because I'm not standing right over it looking either. Still, don't get me wrong it looks like a very nice car to me and theres nothing wrong in my book with painting and doing a lil work to one. My car has parts from probably half a dozen more cars on it.

It would just bother me to paint an original car, not sure if it would cause it to drop in value or not?
Its a 33,000 mile car so thats pretty low.

My Car is pretty sharp as I have restored it, and has 90,000 miles on it, whcih still isnt a whole lot.
Just thinking if I buy a real low mileage car I want to to be mint.
