83 Z28 AutoForm Camaro possibly for sale come next year/gatherin information on it
Hey guys...so I did not put this car in the classifieds ads because the car istechnically for this time NOT for sale. However, I am trying to help a friendright now who has a very busy lifestyle and is thinking of selling the car butis a little too pre-occupied with things to investigate what its worth etc. Ifthe admins move this post that's fine...however I think with me giving somehistory of the cars it would be acceptable to leave it here for now.
Thecar is a beautiful and I mean beautiful 83 Z28 2nd owner bought the car from Arizona out of state! 82K original miles. She also had an 84 she bought brand new from the dealer with the same conversion! Pretty neat huh. The car is located in Massachusetts. Its beengarage kept from what I can tell its entire life and its been well mechanicallymaintained. This car is I think pretty rare...it has the AutoForm conversion, the LU5 V8 305 Crossfire engine. The 700-R4 Auto tranny. I'm not sure about therear gears...bc from what I can tell a very few # of G92 performance axleratios were available 1,009 http://www.nastyz28.com/camaro/camaro83.html. I do not believe she still has the build sheet and SPI codes were not available inside the cars back then, they started in 84? would this rear end be visually identifiable with the black 9 bolt rear end? Or was it different aesthetically back then from the later G92 rear ends?
The next order of business...what is the car worth? Now I know this question has a lot of variables and is only worth what either someone is willing to pay and or current popularity of the cars. I personally would imagine this car on a collector car dealership website could possibly fetch 17K and higher? However again hard to say. I imagine the IROC-Z from 85 to 86 with this particular conversion would fetch that much...but not sure about a Z28 though. I think its important to keep in mind that it seems fair to say that cars on those sites sell for more than the CGs car am I wrong? Hope you guys enjoy the pics I have gathered from her...again she is looking to possibly sell it next year...but wants to get all her ducks in a row and emotionally come to terms with "It either is or is not time to let it go"...I think she wants to see it go to a truly good home...not just a "More money than brains person"...personally I would buy it now if I had the cash...I love it!!!
Also I have personally checked the VIN via GM vin checker and it matches up it was a Van Nuys car, and 13,339 made down the line. Everything on the VIN is what is should be.
A quick history of autoform with the Pontiacs and Camaros...worth reading! http://www.firebirdgallery.com/autoformlot1.htm

Autoform conversions are kind of a gray area. That they're an aftermarket conversion, that hurts their value IMHO. But really, convertibles in general are kind of a hard sell because while they're "special", people shopping for a thirdgen are probably after ttops or a hardtop because that's what they remember. The drop top adds some weight and generally they didn't get the performance options, so the value isn't as pumped up as some other thirdgens.

I may have missed it but what is the mileage on it? Its a very cool car and I think it will take the right buyer for it to bring good money. As Drew said, and I will use myself as an example, when I was looking it had to be a Iroc Z T-top car with a 350 or I wouldnt look at it. Not because there is anything wrong with the others, but because that is what I wanted when the cars came out. Now that I have the Iroc I always wanted, it would be nice to find a 5spd car as well.
As far as value goes, I would say it all depends on the condition, mileage just as any other car. Being an autoform car I cant say if it would help it, hurt it or have no effect.....

The early cars of 82-84 are cool cars, but not demanding big dollars unless it has the L69 engine. This car in particular will not bring much because of many factors. The first being an aftermarket conversion. The second being the "cease fire" Cross Fire intake. These intakes were very finnicky and made a name for themselves back in the day as unreliable.
This car is also far from stock with the ground effects being swapped, the graphics don't match from side to side, the seats have been replaced, the white painted door handles, etc. Without knowing the mileage, I'd say that the market will pay less than $10k for this car.

My thought was around $6k to $7k, but not because that's what it's worth, but that's what the general market will pay for THIS car.

Not sure I'm understanding your deep interest in all things G92. It was a performance gear ratio available in all years of the 3rd gen. It was an option, much like AC.

Calm down!! No need to get upset over my not understanding your "interest" in all things G92. You've started many threads asking about it and you've been given many details regarding it. I'm just not understanding what makes G92 such a "hot topic" issue for you, as it is just an option! Having G92 on a car gives you the performance axle, which also required other options to support it. If using AC is not a good example, then let me use the Bose stereo. In order to get Bose, you were also required to get D27, rear hatch cover. It's an upgrade option.
I am staying on topic, so I'm not sure where you're going with this. Where was G92 listed as an option for THIS car? So, let's not discuss staying on topic.
As to you fighting for my right to free speech, don't play that card with me! I also served, so throwing that at me is useless. Using that to get your points across is the wrong reason to be in the service, so please don't use that as leverage in these discussions and has no bearings to staying on topic.

Also for the record I appoligize, even tho I should NOT be made to feel that way for posting too much about the G92 code. Im sorry this has effected ur day to day operations and life in general...ill try to never do it again if it makes u happy

I think you guys are spot on. The mismatched pieces, repaint, color scheme etc really don't help the car's value and market desirability, but in general I've never noticed Autoform conversions to bring much collector money anyway. Given my personal attraction and appreciation towards later thirdgens, and my experience with early thirdgens, an early car with custom mods and an Autoform conversion is going to be a hard sell.
For MAX value, I'd be looking at least, at a cosmetic makeover. Right now it looks more like a fancy fiberglass boat, with vinyl seats and racey stripes. I'd semi-gloss black the door handles, lock covers, and antenna bezel. Peel off the stripe if possible, consider replacing with a factory style stripe decal. Switch the side GFX back, especially if they're still laying around, but I'd probably even consider buying a set on ebay or hitting the junkyard. Un-pimp zee engine compartment. The master cylinder reservoir cap and the braided hose covers went out in the 90's. Getting these details back to stock appearance widens the perspective market. Custom details are dependent on the beholder's preference while OEM is universally accepted.

Jeremy, again, you need to calm down. I didn't attack you in any way. I merely stated that I don't understand your deep interest on all things G92. That's all I said! You then got your panties in a bunch. I don't have any issues with you, so not sure why your taking my statement as an attack. Keyboard warrior? Really? You do need to get thicker skin as nothing I said was a personal attack on you. Good luck!!
