help me to build and hotrod v8 305 engine on caprice
hi
my car is caprice 1988 with 305 engine
i think my engine have roller lifters and 081 heads
so my usage is daily driving and low mileage but i want higher hp than factory that came (170 hp) then sometimes street race with my friend or new v6 cars like bmw benz Hyundai after 2013 lol
well this is my plan but i cant complete this plan so i want help please help me to complete my engine setup :
machine working on guide boss of heads for installing new valve springs for new cam because i dont want buy new heads like tfs 23 175 or any
my budget is limit ... so i have to shave guide boss diameter and height for increasing higher lift and new springs support .
my selected cam is lunati 20120313 or edelbrock 2209
but i think for low mileage and low end power lunati is better because that is single pattern but edelbrock is dual pattern cam and in lobe lift lunati is winner ! according to this info :

Fig 7-4. For this test, Cam No. 1 was a shorter duration but its faster opening profile in conjunction with high lift rockers produce close to the same area as Cam No. 2. This cam had more duration, but with 1.5 rockers produced less lift. What we learn from this test is that in a motor that’s under-valved and RPM-restricted by stock bottom-end components, it’s a good idea to go for all the valve lift possible, but be conservative on duration.

then for rocker arms i want to buy comp cams 17002-16 1.6 ratio so this R/A increase valve lift to 0.524 from 0.492 (or for 2209 increase to 0.510 from 0.479 )
so i have to change stock valve springs to other pressure rate springs type and specs that compatible with my stock heads and recommended for max 0.525 lift ... and but also have i problem in piston to valve clearance with 1.6 ratio ? or not 0.525 valve lift on my heads and engine is safe ?
for headers i want to buy 1 5/8 primary tubes with 2.36 inches (6cm) exhaust pipes and H pipe with super 44 flow master !
for fuel system fi tech 31003![](http://www.hotrodders.com/images/smilies/thumbup.gif)
![](http://www.hotrodders.com/forum/images/smilies/pimp.gif)
for intake manifold if needed edelbrock 2716 is ready to choose
finish
is this good setup for my goal ?
i think this setup can deliver 280 to 300 HP
with my bad heads 1.84 1.5 ! if i could buy tfs 30310006 then my engine hp go higher than 330
my important problem is valve springs and which cams is better !?
thank you very much for reading this post
your experiences and recommendation is valuable for me

Want to outrun the newer 280+ HP V6 engines in that heavy boat, try a building an aluminum head 383 and going from there.

Dedicated to 77-79, but discussions and parts for all b-bodies. I'm a co-admin and I own a 79 2 door coupe...and it will never be a donk.

Re: help me to build and hotrod v8 305 engine on caprice
Couple things you may or may not know. The $800 EFI TBI “upgrade” plus another $400 for the fuel pump/deliver system will not make any more power than a good carb. It is a little easier to get a smoother idle, may get a couple miles per gallon more, but the old electronic carb if working properly is not a bad system at all. They can be tricked out to support 500 plus HP and just a few tricks/tweaks on a totally stock car and a bump in base timing can make a huge difference.
All that said, unless the carb is bad, I wouldn’t replace it. Even if it is giving you issues, check to see if someone that knows what they’re doing locally and if not, send it off to get rebuilt. These two places have a good reputation over at montecarloss.com - http://www.customrebuiltcarbs.com/index.shtml or https://www.smicarburetor.com/produc...D2/86/sfID3/34 Rebuilds from them run in the neighborhood of $300, which is a little pricey, but a lot cheaper than EFI. If you’re mechanically inclined and there’s not an issue with the throttle plate or fuel wells, you might be able to do a decent rebuild yourself. If it’s running OK now, leave it alone and move on.
How many miles are on the engine? If it’s in good shape, I can see wanting to stay with the 305, but to hang with the newer V6 sedans with a 305, it’s going to take more than just a cam and exhaust. I sure wouldn’t put any money in the 081 heads either. Back in the day, machine shops used to trick them out when they had some down time and could pick up a set for reasonable money, but hardly any of them does that any more. If you can do your own porting, then you can make decent power out of them, but just putting in springs for a higher lift cam is not going to give you much more than a few HP with the stock 0831 heads. If the springs are OK (low mileage) then just put in a cam that has no more than .470 lift and look straight ahead. Later, bump up to Vortec heads and then you’ll have something with a chance to hang with the newer V6 cars.
Below is a pretty good link for a 305 build recipe. Keeping a tricked out electronic Q-jet won’t cost you much if any power over the Holley they used.

I’d also recommend a little smaller cam (linked below) unless you want to change out your stall speed and valve springs – best I recall stall speed is pretty low, around 1400 rpm in that 88 Caprice.
