grab a pair of vicegrips and unscrew that piece (it should come out) take it to the hardware store and see if you can find some threaded rod to replace it.

I had this issue when i put a 3" tall open air element on mine - mine wasnt stripped like this but it want long enough to go through the cleaner so it needed replacing anyway
