Call it 5th Gen Air Intake R&D

So, finishing my LS3 swap and started looking at air intakes. Since I had one my old LS3 5th Gen intakes lying around I decided to see what it would take to make it fit. The 5th gen air intakes are a dime a dozen, so maybe this will be worth it to me.

mocking it up in stock form...in stock configuration the bottom of the air box hits everyting

Starting modification...First, cutting off the end at the throttle body to pull it away from the radiator.

Cleaned up my cut, now it just needs a new rubber couple to connect to TB

Looks good, just needs a coupler now.

Look how nice the stock air box looks in there!! Almost factory. But, I'll still need to cut off the bottom of that large air box.

Cutting off the flange part of the Air Box so that I can still snap the Air Filter on...I had to spend quite a bit of time cleaning up my terrible cut LOL

Here is the flange I needed off the Air Box to snap the air filter under the remaining air box.

Snapped the flange onto bottom of air box...the idea is that the air flow is open from underneath, coming from radiator support area

I think this looks pretty trick...

So I'll need about a 6" piece to extend to box, plus a 90 coupler.

Stay tuned! The only issue I see is that I am creating another 90 from air box to intake tube and I don't really like that design. I think I'll probably order a K&N cone filter 4" clamp on and eliminate the box.

We will see how this goes, I'll probably long term get another set up but modifying is fun so we will see how it turns out for a cheap setup.

I like it. I can't see an extra bend hurting anything.

Ever thought of having a box 3d printed to fit your need?

Not worried about water getting sucked into that open filter from the engine compartment?

Thanks Billgluckman, Yeah as long as the MAF is the middle of 6" straight tube, per GMPP. I guess the extra 90 would be ok, especially if it were not a tight 90.

tealman92 - nah, sounds interesting though!

I thought about that, but how would that be different than a cone filter in the same area?

Re: Call it 5th Gen Air Intake R&D

So I ended up getting a K&N cone filter and cut off the stock box. I'll probably add another piece of tubing and a 45 to get it closer towards radiator, but right now this will get me ready to start my engine for the first time!

Not bad for about $55.00 all in

Added a coupler to clamp to the throttle body

Clamped to throttle body

Cutting off stock air box to make room for the K&N cone filter

Used hose clamp for a guide to cut tube

What's left of the tube, with MAF mount

Clamped to main intake tube

Installed K&N cone filter

Installation complete!
