Steering Box Seepage/Leakage

Noticing some seepage in the form of droplets (3 can be seen here) on the underside of the steering box (91 RS). Suggestions to check? Guessing seals are going, but just wanted your take.... Thx!

Re: Steering Box Seepage/Leakage

It’s probably leaking from one of the power steering hoses or even from the back of the pump, pressure or return line. They typically don’t leak from the end plate, but you never know. I’d clean it up real good with some engine degreaser to see exactly where it’s coming from.

^^^ This ^^^

Beats the CRAP outta mindlessly strafing it with the cubic $$$ parts autocannon. Although, with the pressures in that system, sometimes the fluid can appear A LONG WAY from the actual leeeeeeeek.

OTOH, wouldn't be AT ALL surprised if the leeeeeek turns out to be the return hose. About 99.999% of the time, that's the first thing that goes. That being the case, and being as cheeeeeeep as it is anyway, it's THE ONLY thing(s) I'd just change out without further diagnosis.

Next most common leeeeeek is the pressure hose. Those develop pinhole leeeeeeks at random places along them, more usually butt not always near the ends, and SPEW fluid out when you turn the wheel to the lock and make the pump scream for dear life. The pressure inside the hose goes to something in the 1200 - 1500 psi range, and the fluid can come out in a fine spray that's SO aggressive, it can probably cut your skin, if you get in its way. That's ALOT more $$$$ though; maybe up to as much as $20 or so, even. Not to be taken lightly.
