Miniram vs. superram re: Emissions

We all know about the new emissions laws coming to town next month. I am building up a 383 to put into my car......I figure....well with all this new crap with the laws coming.....I dont have a good chance of passing inspection with the new engine....if Im not going to pass....why should I pay more money for heads that have heat risers......headers with AIR, and a Superram intake with EGR provision that is a pain in the a$$ to put on. Why not save a few hundred by going with non heatriser heads, non AIR headers, and a miniram..which will also give me more power, and look a bit better in my opinion. The answer......feds. So what do you guys think? Am I, along with anyone else doing a swap, screwed with the new laws........should I go with the EGR setup and hope I pass...or go with the non egr setup...and know I wont pass? I dont want to build a track only car here...I want to beable to drive it on the street without worrying about being pulled over for not having a current inspection sticker....and no I dont want to wait until my car is 24 years or however old it needs to be to be exempt. Honestly most inspection stations don't check for an EGR valve/system. So I wouldn't worry about that. Also a lot of places overlook AIR (I'll PM you some info on that). The only thing you'd really have to worry about is the sniffer. But this can be overcome quite easily. Get 2 PROMs for your car. One will be your 'normal' PROM (best for performance). Then get a different one custom-burnt for the sole purpose of passing emmissions. It will run lean and basically crappy, but you will pass. A lot of LT1 guys have been doing this.

The info about the air was interesting...however...would it be possible to delete the EGR valve...but keep the AIR tubes/pump? Or is it a all or nothing deal? Also, if I delete the EGR...and modify the chip for it....will the check engine light still come on at startup...and whenever I have other trouble codes?

I think most people like to get rid of AIR because it cleans up the engine compartment, and makes it easier to work on. You can delete EGR & keep AIR with no problems, though. As long as the PROM is programmed for it, the 'check engine' light will stay off (no codes).
