HRP Slips

I'll try and post two slips at the bottom here. One from last night, the other from May this year.

Mods aren't much at this point: Stock L98 TPI, TB coolant bypass, Ported plenum, good mechanical tune with base timing at 12*. Borla cat-back, stock 700R4 and 3.27 9-bolt rear. AFPR set @ 47 psi, gutted air box.

Best run was in May @ 14.5, just after the ported plenum, new plugs, wires, MSD dizzy. Car was auto-shifting @ 4600. Could feel and hears tires spinning, new Goodyear Eagle F1's @ 28 lbs.

Changes for this week include: Replaced stock shifter with B&M megashifter (again, worked flawless last night) along with shift-light set for 4800. Won't go faster, but gave me control of shift points. Biggest change though was the addition of M/T ET Radials. Didn't hear or feel slip at all. Tires set @ 18 lbs.

The car felt like it took forever to come up to rev, found myself checking tach waiting for light. (Also added new tach, it's good and so is the stock one +/- 300 rpm).

I know the valve stem seals are leaking on # 8 cylinder, I'm starting to suspect a fouled plug there. Car starts and runs beautiful, but there ain't no arguing with the slips.

Headers arrived yesterday (Hooker 2055's), so as I put them on I'll be checking plugs and do a compression comparison. Didn't want to do heads yet, don't plan any money going into the stock ones. But may look at a whole top-end change out a little sooner than planned.

Progress over the past year:

As purchased last year, bone stock:

2.37 60'
10.23 1/8 @ 70.33
15.80 1/4 @ 88.57

With Eagle F1's and Borla cat-back:

2.19 60'
9.73 1/8 @ 71.14
15.27 1/4 @ 89.59

TB bypass and timing @ 8*:

2.14 60'
9.57 1/8 @ 72.57
15.01 1/4 @ 91.13

New plugs, wires and coil:

2.03 60'
9.47 1/8 @ 73.67
14.75 1/4 @ 92.47

New dizzy and timing set @ 12*, + plenum port (5/18/05 slip above):

2.05 60'
9.28 1/8 @ 74.2
14.55 1/4 @ 93.71

I always check weight on the scales after 1st run, averaging 3650 lbs.
1st run of the night is consistently the best, 45 minute run to the track then a 1/2 hour cool down. I have, but seldom, hot lap. Maybe I need to start monitoring front tire pressure?

Have you done any prom work on your car?

I have a feeling you might be running a tad rich. With your FP set as high as it is. Plus, with the advanced timing you could be getting a little bit of knock retard in the upper end.

No PROM work yet, just PM'd 1bad91z this afternoon and hope to do that this week or next. You are right I could be rich, have no way to scan or measure at the moment. No indication of knock retard, but the 'puter is way more sensitive than my ears. Have kept 93 octane in it to avoid detonation with that timing.

Maybe a lower shift point? Have not been on a dyno, but expected 4800 to be a good target. Seemed to take a long time getting there.

Thanks again for the kind words ZAP!

Dave, before you come over to the shop, be sure to set your base mechanical timing back to 6*- 8* if the motor will idle well at that setting. Also lower your fuel pressure back to 44 PSI at idle with vac. line off.

This is a good starting place to tune from. All timing and fuel from there will be handled in the chip.

Yeah, its usually not a good idea to deviate from the stock mechanical timing. Its best if the timing advance is done in the chip itself. Also, changing the fuel pressure should only be done once you know if the car is running lean or rich. Besides changing injector constants if you are still off on the richness / leaness, then a quick pound or two in fuel pressure can net a huge change.

Stock exhaust manifolds are off. Pulled plugs and did compression check, all appear good at 160-170 psi.

There is evidence of running rich, so you are spot on there Sonar_un.

Waiting on Hooker to deliver the package of fasteners, they were missing from the big box with the new headers.

Also changing out starter while under there, what a pain that could have been!

Scheduled for a tune with 1bad91z, waiting on his parts to arrive and my car put back together.
