Title problems in Houston...

Sup guys...

I bought my 92 RS last february from a guy for 600 bux in the Woodlands... It was my first Thirdgen and needless to say I was VERY excited, even tho I did NOT get the title from him, cuz he did not have it... (I have already checked to see if it was reported stolen, but there is a lein on it)

I do not have much experience when it comes to purchasing cars and it seems this guy has skipped town and I cant get in touch with him anymore...

My question to you guys in Houston is, What options do I have at getting the title for this car in my name?? I have a bill of sale and the registration and insurance is in my name...

Thanks in Advance guys...
Rex

I think your options are to pay off the lien.

Think about it, things would get pretty screwy in this country if I were allowed to borrow money for a new car, then sell it to a third party without paying off the lien holder and pocketing the sales price.

If liens were not legally enforcable, lenders would get burned everyday (they probably do get burned everyday but it would probably be worse).

Sorry to deliver the bad news.

Well, the screwy part is that he says its payed for, they just apparently never finished getting him the title. He even told me the dealership he bought it from whom I personally contacted, told them I have the car and who I got it from but they seemed like they didnt even care... its weird...

Contact the courthouse that does the title transfer and explain the situation and see what they say to do.

U may need to get a notarized letter from the dealership stating it has no lien anymore.

he has to get a copy from the lien holder on their letterhead stating that the lien is paid off... (if a lien is ever on a title you have to do a title transfer to yourself to get it removed... or if you lose the title you have to get proof that it has been paid off)

then you have to get a certified copy of the title... get him to sign it... and get the proper form (130U or something like that)... and get him to fill that out as well... then you take it all to the courthouse....

you may try getting a certified copy of the title first... and see who the lien holder is and contact them... if the company is nice they may give you the documentation stating that there is no longer a lien on that vehicle...

Words of advice. Don't buy a car without getting the title. Anything can happen. I recommend investing in one of those Carfax checks on carfax.com before buying. It cannot tell you everything but it can tell you if there is a lien on the car.

He moved and his number is no longer active... I did do a Carfax and thats how I know it has a lein... I talked to the guys at the dealership (I think it was Scott and Sons or something like that) to see if he still owed and they "Couldn't realease any information to me."

And thats were I've been for the past couple of months...

If they don't care about getting their money, then screw them. Heck for $600, chop that sucker up and make a race car, or part it out.

Just kidding...

I'm driving down to Houston to pick up a '91 RS I bought off ebay this weekend. The guy never transferred the title from the person he bought it from, but supposedly he has it. Hopefully it won't be a nightmare scenario like yours is turning out to be.

You might verify the lien next. The carfax info might be old.
