NEED help!! 1986 berlinetta with 700R4 problems?
Hey i have a 1986 berlinetta camaro. It has a 305 v8 with edelbrock carb and intake manifold. My problem is the 700R4 transmission thats in it. It's leaking bad. I keep the fluids up before i drive it the problem is the shifting. It shifts erradic and when you get off the accelerator it kicks out of gear and just coasts till u accel about 3g's of rpms. Is that look towards a bad torque converter. Or does it sound like i need a rebuilding in progress. I had to readjust the tvc b/c it was way wrong. Need some info please!!!!!

Sounds like a bad converter to me, but it has been a long time since I have done anything to a 700R4. Where is the leak at?

The leak is in the front. Really bad. You can fill it up and drive it but the next day you're about a quart low again. If i get a new converter would that help? thanks.

It leaks at the front of the transmission. Put a new gasket pan and found out it wasn't leaking. Leaks about a pint or so a day.

Sounds like you got issues boss. The coasting until 3000 rpms sounds like not enough line pressure. Kind of like when the TV valve sticks open and burns up your 3-4 clutch pack. It could be leaking out the front or you could have other issues inside the unit. Either way the wrecked front seal isn't doing you any good. I figure if you drive it like this for 6 months you would have used up enough tranny fluid to pay for a decent rebuild. I would see about finding a good torque converter (free or cheap is nice) and swap it out when you pull the tranny to change that front seal.

Ya, it sounds like you DEFINATELY need to replace the front seal. Slipping out of gear below 3K does sound like low fluid pressure. Low fluid level can cause low pressure. Leaking cooler lines can cause low pressure. A bad pump can cause low fluid pressure. A bad converter will not cuse low pressure...but it might slip a lot.
My guess is that if it is coming completely out of gear below 3K and "clunk"ing back in to gear above 3K, you have a bad pump or low fluid level. If it just starts moving, but you don't feel a "clunk" as it goes back in to gear, then it might be the converter.
But I'm no expert.

Hey i appreciate the input. on this matter. Could it be the vacuum modulator on the transmission making me not have enough pressure. Just a thought.
