rear end issue

I was just given a 1984 Camaro, I was told they recently installed a Trans Am rear end with it... My question is why does the rear end stick out to the left in the wheel wells... it your behind the car looks like the rear end is 2 to 3 inches to the left????? is their a difference in the way the rear end mount between the two??????? any ideas would be greatly appreciated.....

Re: rear end issue

Something is bent.

I would start by looking at the lateral link(AKA pan hard rod, AKA pan hard bar, AKA track bar,...). That is what maintains the lateral position of the differential. The factory part is not designed to be adjustable.

Your pan hard bar may be missing. If it is missing DO NOT drive the car.
Your pan hard bar may be bent.
You may have an aftermarket adjustable pan hard bar that is out of adjustment.
Your differential may have SERIOUS problems.
Your car may have been in a BAD wreck and be bent up in a way that is not immediately obvious.

You may have a 4th gen differential, but that would stick out on both sides.

Re: rear end issue

Is your car lowered? Sometimes on cars that are lowered a lot with the stock panhard bar the rear end gets out of whack.

Another thought...

Do you have the same kind of wheels and tires on both sides?

Re: rear end issue

wow thanks for fast response guys.... to start vehicle is of stock ride height, appears to be factory pan hard rod not completely positive about yet.... I need so hoist time with the car.... damn thing my hoist decided to stop lifting. repair coming soon....uggg frame is ok had it at BS yesterday (buddy owns one) frame is A-OK he said didn't appear to be wrecked. as for the rest, I met the fella that was 2nd owner... without doubt that rear end is in-bread backyard hacked into car... I just have to get it into air I guess and see what the hell he didn't do properly... Now is their a site where I can get part numbers or proper dimensions on that pan hard rod???? I am guessing I need to break down and ****** a real shop manual for this crate... (wife took a shinning to it) I will have to get it ready for her to drive....

Re: rear end issue

I've done the same thing with my 91. Yours looks as if your panhard bar isn't set right. jegs sells the adjustable for about 95$. Should allow you to remove that dogleg

Re: rear end issue

The other possibility is that your left rear wheel is actually for the front. The 16x8 rims are marked FRONT and REAR because they use two different offsets. If you put a FRONT wheel on the back of the car it will stick out more than a REAR specified wheel. If the previous owner damaged a wheel and wasn't careful about the replacement you may have three FRONT wheels and 1 REAR wheel.
