Ok so iv gotten a million difffrent answeres from a million diffrent people. What are the inspection rules in NC would i be able to legaly swap in a carb'd motor into my 92?

 

Won't pass the visual at a knowledgeable shop. Otherwise it's based on which is newer, the car or the engine. An LS1 in a 92 would have to pass as an OE LS1 car from what I've read on the NCDMV website.

 

well i would definently not be putting a ls1 in. i am wanting to go either a 350 or 383 carbed thats why i am asking. so the car would be newer than the motor. Technology wise that it.

 

When I got my 86 inspected this year and last two shops never popped the hood. They honk the horn, check the lights, wipers and tire tread, look under for a cat and thats it. All they do is the safety inspection 13 bucks.

Its all for nothing anyways as either way you only need the Safety Inspection part of the test so as long as the shop is friendly you will be fine.....ha ha ha tell them hood release is broken!!

Mongoose is correct though the car is suposed to have all the parts that are "supposed" to be there for the car or the motor which is ever newer.

As I have investigated a crate motor swap I was told I have to add all this smog crap from the stock motor to the crate motor to be legal.

I dont think these guys can know what was supposed to be on every possible combination of every car but when you roll in with a bright orange motor with none of the factory style stuff your asking for a fail.......Since the car does not need to pass emissions test it is much easier for the shop to be "friendly"

The yahoos were more concerned that 2 of the 4 bulbs in my CHMSL were out and as I said they never opened the hood or started the car except to pull it in the bay.

 

When they pull up the inspection program in the shop it tells them what to look for. You can do a 350 in the car. The place I take my car to told me it would be OK but I have to have all of the emissions equipment on the car. You don't loose that much by keeping the stuff on so why not keep it. NC will only get more strict so better to be safe than sorry.

 

I recently took an nc inspection course and the emissions equipment just has to be there. Nothing has to work. All they do when they check is pop the hood and see if anything is missing. But depending on your relationship with the shop it doesn't even matter if its there at all.

 

In NC, do you have to be inspected in the county of residence?

 

No, it's a state inspection and can be done anywhere. It's not like Va. where you have to have it done in the county to get the county sticker.

 

thanks, but I think you are wrong on the VA part.

I used to live in VA. Last year. Never had to go to the same county. In fact I regularly went to another county for inspection. Just have to go to court house for the county sticker.

 

It's been 20+ years since I lived in VA. I knew my dad had something he had to do with the county sticker.
